School is not there to prepare you for everyday life.
It has objective to:
1) Get you familiar with humanities greatest scientific and artistic achivements.
2) To give you a sense of world that we are living in
3) To prepare you for some kind of job
4) To prepare you for higher education and specialisation
5) Indoctrination and socialisation of children

My HS spent more time teaching me about how God created the world instead of this stuff. Major facepalm now that I'm 23. **** private schools. seriously.

I go to a private school, i went there from a former public school (2 years ago) and there is a big diffrence were i live. Not only the stuff we learn but also the peple going there.

I go to a private school, which does not force their religious views down our throats and teaches evolution **** me right? Also we were taught finances, resumes, and so on.
#226 to #7 - xpeh (12/23/2012) [-]
I go to a private school as well. There's absolutely no difference between the people here and the people in public schools. Only Christianesque thing we do is memorize verses from the Bible.

Private school kids were no different than public schools. At least where I went. I find it odd that people consider private school kids to be high class respectable citizens. No teenager is a high class respectable citizen.

in 7th grade, whenever someone got in trouble they had to write a fake check to a teacher with an amount specified by them...that was our punishment.

I can totally understand that guy. understanding that a^2+b^2=c^2 is one of the hardest mathmatical formulas in the universe and surely must fill all the mental capacity of a human being.

You know what, this post is kind of stupid now the more I read it. I'm a self-taught programmer, I quit college after three years because it was too expensive and I wasn't learning anything I already don't know. I started my own business and became pretty successful, I work for people all over the world. Most of what I know I taught myself as far as my job skills go. But as far as this post goes, I think it's being a bit cruel to the American school system... at one point you got to point your finger at the dumbass who just doesn't want to learn anything.

Taxes / Voting / Political Parties - What the hell kind of school did this person go to to NOT learn any of that? I had several YEARS of political classes in high school, it was one of our most important subjects, we even learned how to do stocks using a stock simulator

Resume / Cover letter - Senior high school learned how to do this

College loans - Again, wrong. If you really gave a **** about your education you can get help doing this from your high school/college guidance people

Checks / banking - learned this in home etc class or whatever it's called

car / house - what the **** do you you think you learn basic math for???

Jump starting a car - GEEZ MR. POTATOHEAD, I WONDER HOW TO MATCH COLORED CABLES FROM ONE CAR TO THE NEXT?

I want to be on the side of the person who made this but honestly they sound like a complete moron.

The purpose of the taxpayer-funded public school system is to create generations of children educated in subjects that will be beneficial to the public as a whole when these kids grow up. Having every child learn basic math that may not be useful in daily life has more potential to benefit society than teaching them how to jump start a car.

In Ontario high school students are required to take a class in grade 10 where you learn about careers and how to write proper resumes and cover letters and then the next semester is a class about politics/civics.

You cannot graduate without this credit.

For one, there's a rather large chance that OP is in, at maximum, 6th grade, and doesn't plan on taking any form of extra classes because, hey, who cares about their future these days, when you can rant that the the government or school teaching isn't helping you become super rich?

Basic math
Basic social studies/economics
Basic economics
More social studies
Most schools offer school work programs
More math
Guess what more math and basic communication skills
Most schools also offer college preparation classes
Auto tech and shop classes
And finally more economics

So unless you went to school in the ********* part of the U.S. you are just retarded
#362 - deadmuerto (12/23/2012) [-]
YFW you aren't learning any of that on the internet, either

I was lucky enough to have a class in my school that taught all of that kind of stuff. Like how to do a proper resumé and how do dress and act in an interview. But you had to be a senior and have a certain GPA to get in it. It was a nice thing to have though.

I wasn't interested/paying attention when marking out the classes I wanted to take the following year and marked myself enrolled for C.A.S.E because it was a new class. Had no idea what it was. It was a class designed for mentally hadicap students to learn how to dress/act for interviews, apply for jobs, and make resumes. ..... I got to take a class with special education students. =D
#401 - cynicalskin (12/23/2012) [-]
did your high school seriously never have an economics class? or even any social studies class that teaches economics at some point?

what kind of high school did you go to lol
