My experience in War.
Media: we must show explosions
Photojournalists: **** the explosion I gotta photograph all the dead people.
#35 to #34 - pimpmybride (12/09/2012) [-]
one of my closest friends is in the indian army. its best if they dont show all the dead people.
User avatar #43 to #35 - biomedic (12/10/2012) [-]
But if they do people will be more inclined to be against the violence, and bad vibes on the home front really hinder the war effort, just look at nam.
#45 to #43 - pimpmybride (12/10/2012) [-]
um, its kinda naive to think the public have a say in those wars. trust me, we dont. there are power plays and we get to be pawns. period.
User avatar #48 to #45 - biomedic (12/10/2012) [-]
Then what is the point in hiding pictures of our burning enemies if the people's opinions don't matter? I'm not trying to be ignorant or anything, I just think you shouldn't take what you see for truth and question it. I know that popular opinion has no real effects, until it becomes on a large enough scale and there are entire revolutions, but unpopular wars never seem to be a catalyst for that, unless you look at Tsarist Russia, where the unpopularity of involvement in WW1 and a range of other factors led to revolution.

I feel the idea of the pic was to inform the people of this great nation that a RETREATING convoy was firebombed. Ever notice how if one enemy soldier is killed, it gets covered for a week, while friendly fire gets probably one day?
User avatar #52 to #50 - biomedic (12/10/2012) [-]
I don't know about that, there was a pretty big deal when two US strike craft bombed one of our British convoys by accident a few years ago. That was in the news here for a long time. I feel bad for the pilots, they were only following orders now they're in federal prison.
#53 to #52 - pimpmybride (12/10/2012) [-]
Well, we could go on forever, but i see what your saying. Just makes me feel bad for teh crazy **** that goes down in the world. but then, we have fj and 4chan, so i think there still is hope :)

We don't have a say in the war but we sure as hell influence it. What he said about Nam is a perfect example. There was so little support for the war back then and the people in power cared more about staying in their position so they turned against the war. Sorta like a domino effect.

Show a picture of an airstrike and the deaths are a statistic. Show a picture of the burnt and mutilated human corpses that result from those airstrikes and those deaths hit much harder.

If everyone knew intimately and thoroughly the consequences of war, there would be much less conflict. If a country's leader could see beforehand the devastation his declaration of war could cause, he would be less likely to make that declaration. It's easy to push a button and drop a bomb, but pushing that button is infinitely harder if you're forced to see the corpses and know that their blood is on your hands.
#39 to #36 - pimpmybride (12/10/2012) [-]
that was the point. most newspapers wont publish that even today, as no one wants an advert of fried chicken on that paper for.. weeks.. after that.what we get to see in the media is just a watered down version of wars. real wars have more grizzly details than the average joe wants to read with his morning coffee.

I like how the top of the photo says that the convoy was retreating with an overtone that that makes them exempt from combat or somehow more "innocent" than the Americans. Soldiers don't retreat because they give up, they retreat so they can live to shoot again.

I've been embedded with journalists.
They don't bring back an accurate portrayal of war.
They just take pictures of the two extremes of the spectrum.
There's no such thing as 'fair and balanced media coverage'.
