My grandma used to take me to the movie theater and do this

She also used to go to the all you can eat buffet and smuggle out egg rolls for the family

She also used to take the metal, expensive coaster from the expensive restaruants, saying they were supposed to be taken

Holy **** my grandma is a theif

movies theatres don't make any money on ticket sales, that all goes to the box office. Thats why they charge more for snacks because thats where their profit comes from
#104 to #30 - jakeattack (12/07/2012) [-]
yeah but still 13 dollars for a popcorn and drink hell nawh.

They get a percentage of the ticket money.

^True. Depending on how well-anticipated a movie is, the split is usually 75/25 to 90/10 (with theatres keeping the 10-25%) which ends up covering less than their overhead cost, usually. The concession stand is overwhelmingly what keeps them in business. When we buy fewer tickets and snacks because the price is too high, they have to raise their prices again. Vicious cycle, that.
User avatar #50 to #48 - iamthou (12/07/2012) [-]
well I always make sure to buy something at the concessions because I like to support my local theatre.

all I aks in return is that hollywood doesn't make crap movies

Any economy teacher would kick you in the balls for what you said there. Less demand leads to higher price? Sure. And my unicorn shoots death rays out her ass. Short answer is: less demand, lower price. Long answer is: there is only one stable point in price-demand, and it's where the elasticity of both curves is equal.
#79 to #76 - ctsasquatch (12/07/2012) [-]
When movie theatres are bleeding money, they often raise prices because lowering prices (to attract customers) sounds to them like a terrible plan. YES, fewer people buy tickets overall. YES they still lose money. YES they eventually go out of business. As evidenced by the theatre up the way from me. More are shutting down than opening up.

If the manager had half the sense YOU do (or even a 10th grade Economics student's for that matter) he would have seen that coming. The POINT is that it's not a good business to be in right now with the economy the way it is and the ticket sale splits the way they are, and that concessions are their only hope of staying in the black.

My movie theater sells a soda for 5 dollars and candy for 5 dollars.
That's ten dollars for two items that cost 3 dollars together at any other store.

I didn't bother looking. I didn't realize it was a big deal.

Kind of like reposts. There's thousands of them and someone they all still managed to get front page.

I would probably mumble something and then post about it on the internet later or something like that.
