Until gen 4 those moves were all special attacks and therefore awful on Hitmonchan

Before 4th Gen came out. All Electric, Water, Fire, Dragon, and Psychic Type moves were considered special. This is why many people preferred Hitmonlee over Hitmonchan. By the time Hitmonchan was even useful, other Pokemon from 4th gen trumped over him.

i always figured that special attacks were the ones that didn't make contact, i.e surf, razor leaf.
and physical were ones that did make contact...wasn't it like in gen 2 forward?
if so, not all of one type of move could be considered special

Yes they started doing that in gen 4. I have no idea why it took so long

dark was special actually and also why mirrorcoat could work against a bite but still won't affect dark types

Special: Dark, Fire, Water, Electric, Grass, Dragon, Psychic, Ice

Physical : Steel, rock, normal, ghost, fighting, poison, bug, flying, ground

In Gens 1-3 these moves have been always like this

Not in the old games. They did a retroactive change at some point and made them physical.

Because I first played Pokemon when I was 4, until a few years ago, I used to think that I imagined the old att sp.att system. I'm glad that I'm not crazy.

>be gen 2, Gold

That is a reason why I love playing Pokemon. Each run is always special like that and is the reason why I keep playing it.

It also makes it really hard to start a new file, and therefore save over the old one, unless you can trade/transfer your Pokemon to another game for safe keeping.

To me, Fire punch, Ice punch and Thunder punch never really seemed to do much damage that's why i never liked them

Up until the 4th gen, when they gave each move a type of attack (special or physical, as opposed to certain types all having the same attack type), Hitmonchan's elemental punches were terrible because Electric, Ice, and Fire moves were ALL special attacks, and we all know how good his special attack is....*sarcasm*.

Gen 1: Fire Punch at 33, Ice Punch at 38, Thunder Punch at 43
Gens 2 and 3: All three at level 26
Gen 4: All three at level 31
Gen 5: All three at level 36

Look this kind of **** up before saying things. Level 36 for the punch moves is very recent.
