When I first saw Adventure Time.. I thought it would just be another cartoon of random violence and goofy antics. I was not expecting the terribly morbid back story to it all...

The land of Ooo is what's left of Earth several hundred years after a global nuclear war including a necrotic bomb that created (or simply brought) the Lich into the living world. Almost all human life on the surface was destroyed, what survived hid in the tunnel and sewage systems underground. Unfortunately they've all evolved into savage, animalistic, fish-people that have no memory of life above.
Finn as far as we know is the very last living human on the planet.

Meanwhile, before the bombs were dropped, Simon Petrikov was a happy soon-to-be married man that was a collector of rare and ancient artifacts. One day he found a crown. It slowly drove him insane.. causing him to drive his fiance away in fear.. the crown speaks to him of salvation in ice and causes him to give up his life and roam the land for answers. Soon after the bombs are dropped he finds Marceline as a young girl, lost and alone, and helps to keep her calm and happy... possibly these 2 spent some time traveling together before Simon's insanity worsened to a point where he may have sent Marceline away from him.

And now the Ice King is alone.. with no memory of his past life.. and all sense of morals or reason have been torn from his ravaged mind.

"Just a dumb kid's show" my ass.

"Finn as far as we know is the very last living human on the planet."
"Simon Petrikov was a happy soon-to-be married man"
That would make the Ice King a human, so Finn isn't the last one, and Susan showed in the one episode that she wasn't a fish-person.

Ehh.. the Ice King doesn't count at this point in my opinion.

He's an immortal being of ice now really.
As for Susan.. I'm positive she showed she was..

Susan's hat is never taken off to reveal if she is part fish or not.
And Finn is believed to have a sister considering he did in the alternate universe, but it seems more like a hint than proof.

I'd like to edit/append a bit.

Simon began wearing the crown during the great Mushroom War. It was he that prevented total annihalation of all life by using his ice magic to help save the world.

After that, Simon only wore the crown and allowed it's influence to take hold because the new world was so vicious and dangerous. He had found Marceline when he wasn't wearing the crown, it was on his waist. According to the letters he wrote, he was apologizing to Marceline for all the things the crown was going to make him do and become. But he says that he needs to wear it and have it's power so he can keep her safe, with no regard for his own well-being, admitting he's going to lose control and most likely no one will be able to save him.

It's also shown that Simon is an extremely powerful willed man. He is more powerful at resisting the crown than Finn or Cake (Fiona's Cat) were. In the latest alternative dimension universe, Finn loses control only minutes after wearing the crown, tries to make a kingdom of ice with minions and ends up causing the bomb Simon prevented from exploding to go off, destroying the lands. Only seconds after Cake put on the Ice Queen's crown, she went insane with power as well. Simon only desires love and happiness, and he controls most of the crown's insanity. This is why, even though he has virtually unlimited power, he never actually wins any battles. It's not that he can't kill or win, it's that he truly doesn't want to. And the only reason he kidnaps princesses so much, is because all he wants is to have is fiance back, but he knows she's long dead and gone, and he just wants to feel the love he had back then. As indicated in his song, where he begs anybody to just love him, and countless episodes where he tells Finn and Jake all he wants is to be their friend and be happy.

I mistook the show for some silly cartoon, so I never bothered with it. The only episode I can recall is something about some rainbow horse that can't speak english and Finn being afraid Jake doesn't want to spend time with him..

This show sounds to be very well thought out.
User avatar #319 to #228 - Fgner (12/06/2012) [-]
Some episodes are just silly cartoons, but the entire lore and the real storyline episodes (most of them are, but some are just silliness and acid trips) are really well thought out and deep. They plan every single image and word perfectly, for instance they had discussions on whether to include a single sign in the Susan Strong episode on the way down to the sewers (where the fish-people lived) that said "Biohazard Warning". Just that little background piece was a subject of talk.

Oh and Lady Rainocorn speaks Korean. It may sound like gibberish, but she says real stuff, sometimes inappropriate. For instance in "My Two Best Friends", she tells a joke about Jake and her getting naked and running around a farmers field. In another episode she talks about a reoccuring nightmare she has to P.B. where the undead attack her home and kill her family and she can't help, and then she wakes up, but it's still a dream and it all happens again. She's also pregnant with Jake's babies.

Freaking amazing show.
User avatar #325 to #319 - chezburgadominator ONLINE (12/07/2012) [-]
Well I knew she spoke Korean when I read about it online, but I didn't recognize it the way she spoke it.(I listen to KPOP from time to time) It's amazing how they include little "easter eggs" like that by using a character that speaks a different language.
User avatar #158 to #151 - darthblam (12/05/2012) [-]
Ehh.. much of what you just said is theoretical I think, but likely, and I can agree with it. But what I was pointing out was what has been shown clearly in episodes of the show.

Also.. there's nothing that said Simon saved the world.. this is only mentioned in Finn's alternate timeline-based wish. ... so it never technically happened.
User avatar #170 to #158 - Fgner (12/05/2012) [-]
Not really theoretical. I was mistaken with the bombs. I forgot that was from "Finn the Human" not from "I Remember You". In the real war, Simon didn't prevent the bomb from hitting. You can learn a lot from the wiki, I just spent 30 minutes learning about Ooo.
User avatar #334 to #158 - jsrf (12/09/2012) [-]
No its just never happened period becouse finn wished that the lich never existed.
im guessing that simon crossed paths with the litch and somthething happened that cause dhim not to sacrifice himself to save the world
User avatar #232 to #151 - ThatsSoFunnyHeHe ONLINE (12/05/2012) [-]
I could be wrong here, but I don't think the reason Simon wore the crown was ever fully proven.
It seems like the only real answers are assumptions.
We could assume he used the crown to fight off evil things, or we could assume that the radiation would have killed him if he didn't wear the crown.

Also, Cake was just a made up character by the Ice King, I don't a character he made up should be compared to an actual character.
User avatar #318 to #232 - Fgner (12/06/2012) [-]
- The song says he's using it to save Marceline. Marceline was unaffected by the radiation, and even if she was, the crown would only help Simon. Also, in the flashback in "I Remember You", Simon clearly isn't wearing the crown, just wearing it on his belt.
- Good point there. But I still considered it because, he knows more about the crown than anyone. So maybe he knew what it would do to other people. But that was pure speculation.
User avatar #119 to #116 - heartlessrobot ONLINE (12/05/2012) [-]
You know, I guessed that the land of Ooo was some post-apocalyptic world in the one episode where Jake says "No one's reinvented space travel yet". My brother called me crazy, but somehow, I knew.
User avatar #126 to #119 - viatio (12/05/2012) [-]
It was already made known in episodes earlier than that, where the rainicorn's tried to eat Finn and commented that "they thought humans were extinct", and "The Great Mushroom War" has been brought up a few times, like in the movie night episode where they said the notice on the video was pre-war law.
User avatar #136 to #126 - darthblam (12/05/2012) [-]
Not to mention in several scenes where the characters pass by what looks like ruined city buildings with cars and bomb shells stuck in the ground.

Could Marceline eat shades of red at that point? I assumed she was turned into a vampire at the age of (I'm assuming her physical age is around 18) which is when she could eat red.
#253 to #213 - ragged (12/05/2012) [-]
We meet again. As far as I know she's always been shown with vampiric traits. Not sure how she ages...
User avatar #265 to #253 - tvfreakuk (12/05/2012) [-]
Well this is just the thing I'm wondering because it brings her Vampiric state to further explanation in the episodes Finn the Human and Jake the Dog which showcase the alternate reality of a different world in which the Mushroom Wars started differently.
Marceline ages loads, however she is over 1000 years old while guarding the corpse of Simon and she calls herself a "half-demon".
Originally we could have implied that her demonic traits (pointy ears, grey skin and fangs) to the Mushroom Wars mutating her, but in that version of reality the Mushroom Wars hadn't happened yet, so it can't have been that.
However, early on in her child state, she doesn't have the bite marks either, so she can't have been a vampire.
The only logical explanation is that she is half-demon, half-human, and then later on she was turned into Vampire.
The half demon qualities gave her odd appearance and immortality, but she still aged, whereas the vampirism which she obviously got later in life was the result of her eternal youth.

So in an episode awhile back Finn and Jake had to go into Marcy's memories to find something, and through her memories there's the moment of her dad eating the fries while they were in a diner. This made the "Fry Song" and which was played to Hunson when he was terrorizing Ooo, and he made the remark "They weren't even that good, they were really cold." In a more recent episode we see the Ice King has a "memory room" and the sign from the diner is in there. the rest is in the comment picture above.
