Copypasted directly from the Cracked article for those who are interested/lazy:

"It's called the Ganzfeld effect, and it works by blocking out most of the signals that go to your brain. It's the same kind of effect you get when looking into a soft light for a while and lose vision, except at a larger scale.
The sound of the white noise and the light from the outside of the ping pong ball are eventually ignored by your brain. With all those signals out of the picture, your brain has to create its own, and this is where the hallucinations come in. We can't guarantee they won't involve, say, the ghost of Lizzie Borden trying to hack off your scrotum with an ax, but that's the risk you take, dammit."

The Ganzfeld procedure...

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ganzfeld_experiment

We did this as part of our psychology course, and it works better with white light, not red.

It's standard sensory deprivation. Same thing can be achieved by being placed in a pitch black room that's soundproof with padded walls.

Yes! was going to look for that! thank you for posting...
And if you dnt mind, requesting comp of the "10 ways to get high without drugs" (i cant remember exactly), from which the image came from.

I don't know which picture your talking about, but here's something similar.
Most are concerned with oxygen deprivation, but I'll give you a warning, stuff like this is VERY dangerous.
We were messing around with postural hypo-tension and my friend ended up in hospital. If you have swollen tonsils / tonsil problems or an underlying heart condition DO NOT ATTEMPT THESE.

Much, much safer to go for a drug such as Cannabis, the only true way to get "high" is to actually get high.

Thank for the warning and for the pic.
Will not attempt this at home (Although the guy beneath me looks like he sure had a lot of fun...)

It takes quite a while before your brain decides its sick of the lack of input and just starts making stuff up. Works better with noise cancelling headphones than with static, because the static counts as input.
