Your comment made me laugh.

But still, the tzar bomba was the largest bomb ever detonated.
User avatar #453 to #17 - swimmingprodigy (12/03/2012) [-]
It was supposed to be a 100 megaton bomb.

They realized that when the 100 megaton bomb explodes in midair, it's gonna create a shockwave traveling in all directions (including down). The shockwave would be so powerful that the air traveling down would hit the ground, bounce off, and go back straight up in the air, pushing the fireball higher in the sky than where it detonated from. They decided this would **** **** up TOO much, so they reduced it to 50 megatons and tested that.

Also, they tested this over Soviet land in the Arctic circle, not Antarctica
User avatar #518 to #17 - skeltonlax (12/03/2012) [-]
Even if it was purely theoretical it is still scary to think that something this powerful could be made

No,they removed the beryllium lenses from the devices pit(the pit is where the big boom happens) and also removed the neutron guns from it. They also did not use the heavy hydrogen injection.

They used lead lenses instead, cutting the power to about half.

It still ****** everything up on the island it was dropped on.

it didn't only **** **** up at the island it was dropped on, it shattered the windows of the buildings in some parts of Finland. and besides from halving the explosion, they chose to detonate the bomb in like 4 kilometres up in the air (or sum like that), because if it detonated at the earth's surface, **** would go down.
#237 - chulito (12/02/2012) [-]
How the hell do these things get tested without ending all life as we know it on Earth?
User avatar #303 to #237 - elcreepo ONLINE (12/02/2012) [-]
Actually, the russians feared Tsar Bomba would destroy the aircraft carrying it and create widespread disaster with its fallout.

So they cut it down to 50 megatons and detonated that. Only multiple 500 kiloton bombs going off at once could destroy the entire earth with fallout/widespread destruction/nuclear taint.
User avatar #244 to #237 - artyommetro ONLINE (12/02/2012) [-]
they tested the only one they ever made and it cost to much to make another like that (for effective ICBM use)

The Tsar Bomba was originally designed to have twice the yield, but even the Russians thought that was overkill (the drop aircraft would have been vaporized), and it the nuclear fallout would have killed everything for hundreds of miles around

A 1000000000kt bomb dropped in the center of the Central African Republic could take out most of Africa, 1/3rd of Saudi Arabia, half of Yemen, 1/4th of Jordan, and a good chunk of Israel.

If you wanted to completely nuke the earth with the exception of
North America
40000000000 Kilotons would be needed
#86 to #69 - anon (12/02/2012) [-]
Surely we would want to do the other way around?
Nuke all of north america and NOT the rest of the earth?

that would require only about
2,000,000,000 KT

A well placed 100000000 kiloton bomb would wipe everything out except for Hawaii. (if placed right, in the northern part of botswana)

if set in Frankfurt with 100000000000 kilotons, the only place "safe" would be New Zealand
User avatar #82 to #78 - thatguywatchingu (12/02/2012) [-]
With 100000000000 kilotons, if you place it right on the text 'South Atlantic Ocean' then the only safe places are Wake island and the Midway Islands, which takes the population down to around 61 people (and an air base)
User avatar #248 to #82 - symustafa (12/02/2012) [-]
Oh yeah, and if you detonate a bomb with 100000000000000 kilotons, you would destroy the world 3 times in a row. Add 2 more zeros and makes that 3 and a half times.

fun fact the Tsar bomb test was going to be twice as large but the soviets where afraid that it would **** the environmental up so they cut the payload down in half also the bomber that dropped it could not outrun the blast wave if it was that big.

There were people afraid the first atomic explosion would ignite the earths atmosphere.
#129 - gammajk (12/02/2012) [-]
Something interesting that happened with the Tsar Bomba - The blast wave actually refracted through the atmosphere and caused damage as far away as in Norway and Sweden when it was detonated on the island in the picture. Also, OP's picture is misleading - the mushroom clouds represent the yield, not how big the actual mushroom cloud is.
