Don't use knifes. A katana is made for quick draw and do pierce through flesh. and it's a medium ranged melee weapon. Perfect!

too high maintenance for a good zombie weapon

Personally I always liked weapons of the blunt force trauma variety, which I feel there is a serious lack of in the walking dead.
Small clubs or bats would be good for bashing skulls...

No, you never use knives for cutting, that's impractical. They're a stabbing weapon. You get in close and go one under the chin and one through either the base of the rear of their neck, or the nasal cavity. You only use two because there is a chance it'll miss the crucial parts of their brain. You don't even pull the knives out as that is a waste of time. Kitchen knives are plentiful and lightweight, making it relatively easy to carry a dozen of them. (This is all assuming we're talking slow, meandering zombies where you have the advantage in speed. This would obviously never work on the quick and brutal variety.)

The knives at the top are Ka-Bar's zombie killing knives, available at most hunting/knife stores pretty much everywhere. will look into the rest.

Have you guys ever heard of the FUBAR? I have a couple of them (construction tool). They are ******* awesome. It has a huge hammer on one side, then jaws on the other and the handle is a crowbar. Its a demo tool and its super fun to use to take down walls.

My grandpa gave me that third knife for my birthday.
It's a neck knife.
I carry it around, and throw it at trees because it's all one piece of cast steel.
It's great.
