Fuck you, everyone who goes "HURR DURROUR DIS GENERATION SUCKS." and goes on to list problems like cigarette and alcohol use, things associated with every generation. You only say/believe those things because they fuel your own sense of superiority over others. You feel the need to demean others to make yourself feel better, to excuse the 5+ hours spent everyday staring at slightly humorous images.

Our generation is awesome, one of the best in the last few centuries. We're easily the most open minded and non-judge mental groups of people. Think, how was a gay person or an atheist individual treated during the eighties or any decade before that? Not even gay, just a somewhat odd individual, like a guy who didn't like sports and wrote poems about dinosaurs? He'd of been bullied, treated like shit. Kids of older decades were more cliquish. Compare that to today, where people who vary in personality and interests are still friends.

We, as a whole, have the wonderful mentality where we can disagree with someone and still respect their opinions/ beliefs/way of life. People can be quirky and still be accepted. That hasn't always been the case.

Even better, today's kids are extremely scientifically and technologically literate, relative to the past. There was no Discovery Channel or Animal Planet, NatGeo, etc during the eighties. Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman receives millions of views from our age group. Students at my school and many others have huge interest in astronomy and love talking about fascinating scientific phenomenon.

TLDR- This generation rocks because of our open mindedness and love of science.

Open minded people with passion for science are the minority.

I'll admit that most of this generation is pretty cool. But there are also a lot of people in it that just flat out disrespect everyone, and think they're better than everyone else. Let me give you an example.
I had this awesome teacher in high school. I still talk to him, and he's even coming to the big wedding ceremony that my husband and I haven't been able to afford yet. We always had fun in his class, but we learned too. Like, the two days before he'd give us a test, we'd all study in class together by playing games, like bingo (except with the test info) or basketball (we were only able to shoot after we answered a question correctly), and there were prizes, and he brought snacks. I still remember everything I learned in that class.
I visited the school the other day, and visited that teacher. He seemed really sad, and he told me it was because he wasn't able to have fun with the students anymore, because they'd all just abuse the privilege and basically walk all over him. He had to conduct the class as a typical class solely because of the lack of respect the students show toward him. And kids are doing worse in class now, and he hates to see people not thrive.
Another one: I was in the store the other day picking up some decorations for the table for Thanksgiving, and the way that some young teenagers (probably around 13) were talking to their parents was unbelievable. I would've slapped them across their mouths. And the way they were dressed was even worse. Does nobody know the meaning of modesty?
Kids today (and, sadly, adults too) are too self-obsessed, and think that they're gods, when the truth is they're just annoying.
It's hard to believe that kids' attitudes have changed that much in such a short time.
I'm not saying everyone is like that, but there are a LOT of people that I've seen that are.

Okay,i dont wanna be the bad guy here in this situatuon.
Although its true and fascinating what you posted, not EVERYONE says "HURR DURR DIS GENERATION SUCKS",(Some people actually say that)
Of course our generation is amazing, and it gets even better with technology while the years advance
But the only reason that people say that our generation sucks is because of alot of reasons.
-Stupidity
(That being said you may love this video)

Did you really have to go through all that bullshit just to prove a point?
I would've accepted a small amount of information

When people say "hurdur this new generation sucks" I think what they REALLY refer to is just the change in preferences, like music and style. Not the fact of how open-minded people are about things. I was born in the 90s and I couldn't give a flying fuck if anyone was gay. They can do what they want with their life as far as I'm concerned.

But really I find people who say "this generation's music sucks, blah blah nicki minaj, 50 cent, all music artists these days just promote sex, drugs, money and violence" a bit hypocritical.

Its not like 80s rock didn't promote sex and drugs (hence the term SEX, DRUGS AND ROCK AND ROLL), and punk promoted anarchy and 'disobeying the system'.

The best solution is just to ignore them, all in all they're an embarrassment, its like they're having a midlife crisis in their late teens/early 20s.

I agree with you, our generation is actually pretty amazing. I completely disagree with your reasoning as to why we say things like "DIS GENERATION SUCKS" though. (Some people are that way for sure though.)

It's much like the reason most people believe pregnancies are at an all-time high, when they're actually at an all-time low. Media fixates on the "bad". What is 90% of FJ's front page regarding Facebook or another social network? How stupid any individual was acting at a certain time. These people are actually not as rampant as they appear though, we just publicly acknowledge them FAR too much.

That being said, there's exceptions to everything. I just think this is the main reason.

Sure, our generation rocks because of open-mindedness and love of science.

But because of increases in technology we've become lazy as fuck and ignorant to the world around us (and this is coming from a US citizen).

I love the social change, just not the apathy and lethargy that has developed.
#10 to #9 - stripeygreenhat (11/23/2012) [-]
You don't think people were apathetic before our generation? Our grandparents walked past walls decorated with posters or crudely drawn Asians with slogans like "Put the Japs in their place!".

If anything, technology has increased our awareness of other cultures. Kids today are constantly exposed to different groups of people of varying ideas and sophistication from all over the world. Just today I saw this article on the frontpage of Cracked: You need to login to view this link

The example you just gave was of ignorance and racism, not apathy. We know about other cultures, but honestly - little has been done to change problems in other worlds, especially since people can simply give money to a charity and not bother to care any more.
#19 to #11 - stripeygreenhat (11/23/2012) [-]
That's complete bullshit. Why does giving charity count as apathy/lazy to you? Someone who gives to charity is sacrificing some of their income, money that could have gone to things that directly benefit the.Arguably, giving money rather than time is the best way to change the world. Here' s a source arguing that people who travel to third world countries to help take up resources, and that giving money is the best answer:

Here's a site with data on charity in the U.S: You need to login to view this link

Most interesting figures (in the U.S):

-63.4 million people volunteered in 2009, with a 26.8% volunteer rate.11

-65% of households give to charity.

-International Affairs organizations experienced the largest giving increase in 2011, receiving 7.6% more than the previous year, making the two-year increase more than 15%.2

Are you saying that people aren't motivated to organize and rally for causes? As opposed to earlier generations? There are still plenty of rallies done for good causes. People do walks for cancer all the time, anual gay parades are common for almost every U.S city. Over 200,000 people attended Jon Stewart's Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rally_to_Restore_Sanity_and/or_Fearen.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rally_to_Restore_Sanity_and/or_Fear

I actually came to a conclusion before you called my statements "bullshit" (a dickish statement you didn't have to make, by the way) and presented your facts.

I was wrong about our generation. It's not our generation in specific that I hate, it's people in general.

I'm sorry I phrased that so harsh. Despite my rudeness, I enjoy arguing with people and thank you for your time.

Thanks. You actually had good points (and proved me wrong); I'm just tired and glad this was a mature discussion.

Good day.
