I would have a full team of about 6 different types of pokemon, but I would only use 2-3 of my team... and I did just fine.

Always needed a fighting type, water type, dragon type, and ground type. The rest was filler.

Generally the best way to play is to use 3 or 4 pokémon, that way you have enough diversity in your team and you can keep them all at a fairly high level.

Me and my friends had a challenge to complete the game with only 2 pokemon (HM slaves don't count) entirely doable.

Back in the Gold/Silver days my brother and I would train only our starters and catch five other pokemon to use as meatshields to revive our starter when we got to the Elite Four. I believe I had a Level 80-some Feraligatr, Level 35ish Red Gyarados, Level 25ish Sudowoodo and 3 other random Pokemon cuaght in Victory Road once and I made it through just fine.

Most of the time I remember my childhood is when I do something I did back then or someone else brings something else about it. I have so much ******* nostalgia when I play LOZ, pokemon, and super mario bros deluxe for gbc.

I'm sorry you are like this.

I was just thinking about buying a gameboy, and some Pokemon games, and recording myself playing, so I can watch 20 years from now, and enjoy the "memories".

I remember finding a shiny magikarp in SS. Most depressing day of my life, finding a shiny and everybody else having it.

Needless to say I have a lvl 100 gold Magikarp.

i remember catching the red gyrados and still leveling up a magikarp that i caught.
the magikarp was stronger in the end. i got it to level 50 before evolving and upped its sp.atk to max it out.

I was bored one day and did a run through of Silver. I got lazy and couldn't be bothered to train anyone up besides my Feraligatr, who was like level 100 by the time I got to the last gym.

I think the only other Pokémon I had was the red Gyarados for things like waterfall and whirlpool that I didn't want to teach Feraligatr.

MFW when destroying everyone with one Pokémon.

one pokemon (charizard in fire red for me) and no items works out perfectly well untill you get to the final 4
you have to use 2 full heals against them

It's possible to solo the game, with HM slaves of course. I did FireRed a year or so ago using only Charmander ->Charizard.

You could probably true-solo it in RSE. Swampert, but the whole not flying situation would be pretty annoying.

Roll with the starter until you reach Mt. Silver, then you get your ass a Larvitar. Then you goddamn win.

Me and my friends did something similar. In saphire/ruby we were only allowed to use our starter pokemon to fight every other pokemon was hm slave. We would try to finish the game with the lowest level starter. I beleive the lowest we could get was like a lv 58 swampert.

You just level yourself up to ridiculously high levels or use a ******* Steel type.

But why do that? That just takes the fun out of it. And steel type will be useless when you take on Red's Charizard.

The only generation this doesn't work as well with is Gen 2. For whatever reason, I actually struggle to clear that game with just the starter. Every other version is easy as ****, but silver and gold give me so much ******* trouble.

Flamethrower is an amazing attack, true, but I think the issue with Gen 2 was the quality of the starters. I never liked picking Cyndaquil, despite the fact that I always choose the fire starter. IDK, I just always went Totodile, and I guess it just ****** me over all the time.

I always picked cyndaquil, and I always came out happy, even in Soulsilver. And I always choose fire pokemon too, for my first playthrough on each game.

I think I balked at choosing a fire ONLY starter. Other than the original versions of Red and Blue, every fire starter has had a secondary type. Blaziken is without a doubt the best starter ever as far as I'm concerned, followed closely by Charizard.

I liked the personalities some of them had. Bulbasaur was just a badass dude. Meganium was huge, and was always smiling. So it was like having a little buddy along. Sceptile thought he was too damn cool with his twig in his mouth. And Serperior is cocky as ****.
Torterra was alright I guess.

I made a playthrough of Heart Gold and only trained a Tododile. It was level 70 when I finally got the balls to challenge Chuck.
