The only people who are losing money on their content because of piracy are those who don't make content worth paying for.

i completely agree! people who say "omg piracy is amazing for the sharing of knowledge MAN!" are lying to them selves. We all know what you want to pirate and its not books from universities or other educational institutes!
User avatar #9 to #1 - Loon (11/21/2012) [-]
Doesn't matter to me. I think the whole entertainment industry and the way we percieve it needs to be reformed. Noone has to make millions or even billions of dollars from making music. Maybe musicians will just have to make average pay, and just do what they do because they love doing it , and not because it pays off big time. That way we could probably also get rid of all the people who just want money and have nothing real to say or contribute.
#14 to #9 - notafunnyguy (11/21/2012) [-]
same goes with sports. hate seeing sports players making millions of dollars. if you like it, play it. it shouldn't matter what it pays. so many people avoid doing jobs they love because the pay is low
User avatar #33 to #14 - BroadSword (11/21/2012) [-]
What you're talking about is starting to sound something like communism, where no matter what job you had, you had the same income. The problem with that kind of scheme is that few people can be bothered to get a good degree from an expensive university if they will earn the same amount as someone who doesnt have to. That is one of the major flaws of communism.
User avatar #113 to #33 - burningsmurfs (11/21/2012) [-]
I think he was going more for, what these people get paid should be a bit more reasonable for what they do. I mean I know they train hard and risk injury but I am not sure I would agree with paying athletes MILLIONS of dollars. Musicians is a bit harder to decide for me since they are making an album people actually buy and can enjoy over and over. Although I don't miss paying 20 dollars for EVERY cd you ever bought back when companies were doing their stupid price fixing that took years to end.
User avatar #93 to #33 - turboderp (11/21/2012) [-]
Well, if you had one goverment for the whole world, and when you are born they decide what job you should try to get, etc. you get paid, but we all get paid the same (maybe +/- 10 % if you have a harder job etc. but shouldn't matter) and we have to pay for food etc. so we can decide what we want to use our money on, vacation, what car, house etc. But the important thing is that we all could afford food and still have some spare money. The companies doesn't need to pay for materials or anything, they ask for it and the goverment fixes it. It would make it impossible for private companies, and it would be boring as hell, but if you think only about the progression of technology and the human race, how far we could get if we worked like that.. Nasa didn't need fonding etc. the same way it does now. It's not something I want to be, but think about how far we could get, faster than what we can now.

Tack on $1 extra or equivalent to everyone's monthly Internet bill. I mean globally, every single person who pays for internet. That $1 would simply be a tax to distribute to the major music and movie industries around the globe This $1 would allow complete access to download all music and movies without any risk of criminal prosecution. Even though I find even this to be ridiculous, at least it would shut up the misinformed whiners and greedy corporations who actually think piracy causes a loss of sales. I would gladly pay $12 extra per year for the ability to download as much as I want.

I'm going to take a risk here and post an anti-piracy opinion on the Internet.

You see, there is a difference between what that quote says(All humans should have unlimited access to knowledge) and what 99% of TPB does, let people get games/music/movies for free that they ought to pay for. The word for that is stealing, but apparently, since its a copied file, it doesn't matter right? Its not like your getting a product without paying for it. Some one else did to get that file in the first place, so its fine. No its ******* not.

Let it be known I don't very much care for people stealing movies and music, those mediums make most their money at theatres and concert/contracts. But in the gaming industry, piracy seriously hurts developers, as much or more then the used game industry, and is part of the reason for high game prices. It also causes ************ like that mess of Idontevens and ******************* that was Diablo 3. In the near future, all games will be like that, because of piracy.

The only time I find piracy acceptable is for seeing if a game/program(Ive never even heard of someone practising this with music or movies) is worth it before hand, but only if you buy it afterwards if you liked it.
#112 to #106 - Xyhpon (11/21/2012) [-]
I agree with you honestly about how it is a major blow to game developers at times, and how it can seriously effect their ability to produce more games. For example I love Bethesda and so far every game they've made. Unfortunately I have no job yet as I'm still trying to finish high school with a good GPA this time, and my parents do not have the money to buy games. Hell the computer I have was given to me by my parents as my only birthday present which was given to them by friends at their church. I have pirated quite a few games, and I am not proud about most any of the ones I have pirated because the game developers deserve a reward for making such good games. Again, I don't exactly have the money to pay for any of the games and would like to try them out, however when I do land myself a job that can pay for what I need and more I don't believe I'll pirate anymore at all. Not to mention that when that happens I will be going back and buying all the games I have pirated before to try to right what wrong I have committed and support those who deserve to be supported.
User avatar #114 to #106 - sketchE (11/21/2012) [-]
i was going to point out concerts and theaters but you hit it so good on you. what i do is buy a game and if i want it for my computer for whatever reason ill download it but its almost always bought for my 360 as well
#111 to #106 - rummler (11/21/2012) [-]
I completely understand where you're going with this.
It's all about morality.
If you check my torrent folder you'll see that there is a lot of media that I will more than likely not pay for in the future.
However, that doesn't mean that I haven't in the past.
I tried out Black Veil Brides and I liked their music. So I actually went out and bought their albums.
I understand that it's wrong to the producers, but not everyone can actually pay for their products while working a minimum wage job.

Information is already free. Entertainment isn't, and it's really important that people see the difference.
People think it's okay to just take someone's stuff and then buy it if you like it? Entertainment isn't Wikipedia where you donate at the end of the year, it's a, you buy it and feel bad because you wasted money on a piece of **** , or a you buy and and are proud of making a good investment, relationship.
User avatar #53 to #24 - eight (11/21/2012) [-]
98% of the entertainment I download "illegally" would have never been purchased in the first place. Because of this, I would never have viewed or listened to the movies or music and would not have been able to tell others what I think about it. Usually, when I tell others that a particular movie is really good, they too will check it out, and many will purchase it because they prefer to have a physical copy. They may not have never seen the movie if I hadn't illegally downloaded it, watched it and spread the word. So basically, downloading in most cases increases income for the entertainment industry. If you are familiar with the download laws passed in Japan, you would see that since it was made completely illegal, sales have fallen dramatically and quite surprisingly to the companies and politicians.
User avatar #168 to #53 - awesomenessdefined (11/21/2012) [-]
Why the Quotation marks around Illegally?
Yeah, well that also would have happened if you just bought it and told people about it. Piracy had nothing to do with it. Or you could have read an online review or something.
And those laws in Japan didn't really affect it that much. The market dropped by 16%, but it did that last year before the laws as well. The legal music downloading industry has been declining for a while now.
And When south Korea got strict on piracy, their global ranking in the Music Industry Jumped from 23rd to 11th.
User avatar #169 to #168 - eight (11/22/2012) [-]
In truth we are free people, but we allow others to make rules for us. Illegal doesn't exist. There are no laws in nature, only instinct. Society simply chooses to follow rules. What is illegal today may not be illegal tomorrow and vice versa. The quotations indicate that illegal is not real. It doesn't exist. Nothing is really illegal, or legal.

I could advertise if I bought it. But I simply can not afford to buy or rent every movie I want to see. The prices are outrageous. I would much rather go without viewing the tele or movies. I have access to the internet, I pay for internet, I have the right to use my internet in any way I want to. When I download a movie, I don't get a nice case with cool features and a menu. Often times I don't even get credits! And sometimes it is bad quality. I do however buy merchandise of my favorite shows (as I do not have cable), I buy merchandise of my favorite bands too. Some people will always want physical copies of their entertainment. I don't. It will one day bite me in the ass when I lose all that I have saved though. Piracy truly isn't as big of an issue as people make it out to be. Record companies and movie industry still make their millions and billions.
User avatar #170 to #169 - awesomenessdefined (11/22/2012) [-]
Illegal exists. It's what we all agree we shouldn't do because it either hurts someone, or something, in some way. It is in nature, animals just can't enforce the rules. The case or the menu doesn't matter, and who cares about the credits? And you don't have the right to use it any way you want to. For example, you don't have the right to hack someones profile and mess stuff up, you don't have the right to plan terrorist bombings. Piracy is a big deal because those record companies aren't just one person, they are thousands, and someone on top may not lose anything but people that work for them do.
User avatar #172 to #170 - eight (11/22/2012) [-]
I have been around for awhile, I understand the concept of freedom, and society today is not free. Don't kid yourself. Illegal DOES NOT exist. It is a man made attribute. It does not exist in nature. If humans died out, there would be no laws. All we need to worry about is survival. We have the right to do anything we please. Society may hold us accountable for those actions, but we have every right because we were given the freedom of choice. Society is trying to stop us from having choice (which is impossible and always backfires).
We live in a digital age and you can not steal air. Downloading is not the same as walking into a store and stuffing your pockets. No one should be fined or imprisoned for it. People will always want physical copies of entertainment and those people will buy it. There will always be a market. And again, piracy is not an issue. Here is why. People who download would likely not have purchased it anyway. That means no sale was lost, no money lost.
I plan to see only one movie this year. The Hobbit. I will watch that in the movie theater. When it is released on dvd and bluray I will download it. I won't lose a moments sleep over it because I know they will make all of their money back plus millions more. Also, there is little point in buying disks considering they will be replaced within the next 5 years.

If piracy was such a big deal, these companies would actually invest in the research required to come up with actual figures. If you notice the figures that these companies currently put out, they are speculating the amount lost, not coming up with anything solid.

Now before you reply again, I have been around a while. I still have original records for Christ sake. I have countless dvds and vhs. I have bought forms of entertainment for 30+ years and I am through with it.
I am betting that between me and you, I have done a lot more research on both psychological concepts of society and piracy. Sources: Decades of experience/knowledge.
User avatar #173 to #172 - awesomenessdefined (11/22/2012) [-]
Uhuh, and in what way aren't we free? Just as a start up question.
User avatar #174 to #173 - eight (11/22/2012) [-]
Can you build a house in the middle of a forest? Can you simply go out into that same forest and hunt animals to survive? Can you start your own farm to feed yourself? Can you start a business just because you decide to want to make money? Can you get married and have children? No. You have to have license, permits and a lot of cash to do any of those. If you are caught doing any of those things without license and permits you will risk fines and even PRISON time. We are slaves to the government and society. We are sheep being herded by the rich and powerful. The government doesn't even allow you to live the way people have been living for thousands of years. They are telling you that you must pay taxes. It isn't a choice. You can't legally live "off the grid". Our basic survival tactics have been stripped away from us. If the government says "You can't" then you are not free. It is as simple as that.
