STORYTIME!

I was once watching Potter Puppet Pals, and I was watching the Trouble at Hogwarts episode, where Harry, Ron and Hermione shoot Voldemort with AK-47s. I think to myself, "Wait, so why didn't they actually just do that in the first place?"
My father, who was allegedly sleeping on the couch behind me, wakes up and says, "BECAUSE MUGGLE WEAPONRY IS USELESS AGAINST DARK MAGIC. IDIOT."

I legit got schooled by my father in Harry Potter.

Actually, in Harry Potter it is the 20th Century, as the final book and film is based in 1997 and 1998. Do your homework OP.
User avatar #2 to #1 - fudginghell (11/16/2012) [-]
Granted they should still use guns.

Close, but by the end of book 7 it's 1998.
Also, Hogwarts is in Scotland, not England or Britain or wherever most people think it is.

The Ministry of Magic is in London, though...
User avatar #31 to #5 - haaaxderp (11/17/2012) [-]
I'm pretty sure there were guns in 1997.
User avatar #4 - barenoizedub (11/16/2012) [-]
Also no modern technology works within Hogwarts grounds; watches, phones anything. do your homework OP.
User avatar #6 to #4 - holdup (11/16/2012) [-]
how is that?
User avatar #80 to #4 - kirbyking (11/17/2012) [-]
Only certain watches don't work, wind up watches do.
User avatar #7 to #4 - RageRambo (11/16/2012) [-]
So... Gunpowder won't explode?
User avatar #8 to #7 - reican (11/16/2012) [-]
who needs unstable gunpowder when you can point a stick at someone, saya word and BOOM
User avatar #9 to #8 - RageRambo (11/16/2012) [-]
I'm not saying that the wands are weak. Most firearms aren't modern technology. They should work within Hogwarts simply because they aren't using technology to make them work. Just gunpowder.
#10 to #9 - lostwoodskid (11/16/2012) [-]
The hammer hits the bullet igniting the gunpowder and the force of that in a small chamber forces the bullet out of the barrel
User avatar #11 to #10 - RageRambo (11/16/2012) [-]
Yeah. So. Long story short. Guns should work in hogwarts.
#14 to #11 - benjah (11/16/2012) [-]
i would guess there's a ward against projectiles, think about how little people actually got hurt from explosions. and with potions class and fire spells and stuff, things were probably a bit explosive. so the gunpowder would explode but i think magic would stop the bullet doing any damage
#18 to #14 - rprol ONLINE (11/17/2012) [-]
If Voldemort was such a threat I still don't understand why the Ministry of Magic didn't cooperate more with the regular government and get the SAS to kill him
#41 to #18 - benjah (11/17/2012) [-]
good question. ask j.k.rowling. she should know
User avatar #3 - charagrin (11/16/2012) [-]
Agreed, magic is nice and all, but a 240 grain .45 caliber round traveling at 950 FPS will drop most dark wizards before they can even raise their wand.

User avatar #92 to #27 - doctorfailkins (11/17/2012) [-]
guns weren't banned during the time that Harry Potter is set
User avatar #15 - noobtankz (11/16/2012) [-]
But it didn't take place in modern times... The final attack on hogwarts took place on may 2 1998. ._. 20th century bro.

User avatar #12 - heartlessrobot (11/16/2012) [-]
Aren't guns illegal in Britain? Maybe that's why there's no wizarding school in the USA, we don't need magic.
User avatar #19 to #12 - legodude ONLINE (11/17/2012) [-]
They are not, just hard to get with LOADS of red tape. But you can have a cannon on a shotgun licence.

Weapons do not feed from clips, they feed from magazines.

They aren't the same thing, a clip is a device used to feed ammunition into a magazine, a magazine feeds the ammo into the weapon.

I was a bit forefront about it, to be honest. It's really a very common mistake and nothing to be ashamed of if you aren't around weapons often- but coming from a family where everyone's been in the military and should know the difference...

Yes, it is in 1999.

How's that supposed to work out, anyway? The started 1990ish, so +8 would still be 1998.

In HP 5 Harry writes Sirius a letter in which he writes that Dudley destroyed a Playstation, a new console. The PSOne came out around 1996, if I'm not mistaken.
#90 to #83 - braindamagedteen (11/17/2012) [-]
Harry is born in 1980,he gets his letter when he is 11(1991) and by HP 5 the year is 1996.
