It's funny because I should be learning for my engineering exams but instead I'm here looking at this...

y'' + y' + (5/4)y = g(t)

y(0)=0 y'(0)=0

g(t)= { sin(t) for 0<= t < Pi
{ 0 for t >= Pi

when you can solve for "y" you have my permission to bitch

Could you give me an example of a practical application of this type of problem?
User avatar #83 to #82 - collegedood (11/18/2012) [-]
of differential problems with step functions? when you are building a skyscraper and you want to find the frequency that building puts out as wind blow on it at different parts of the day. or not using a step function and using the equation to find the natural frequency of the building and how to find ways to prevent the building from collapsing
User avatar #84 to #83 - mcatheistnuggets (11/18/2012) [-]
Hmm. That's way out of my league there. **** , I'm in high school Algebra II and we were doing some **** where we had to solve an equation like:( 3x^3 + 2x^2 + 22x = 0) and we had to solve for {x}. The best example the book could give is there is a block uncovered by archaeologists that is blah blah blah, and they needed the dimensions in meters, and the answer was 2m x 11m x 15m. I literally asked the teacher, "Why the **** didn't they just measure it, why over-complicate something so simple?"
User avatar #85 to #84 - mcatheistnuggets (11/18/2012) [-]
Her answer was "I don't have to answer that, it's on the test so I'm teaching it to you, I don't make the tests, and you better learn it, because you need this class to pass." ........Bitch.
User avatar #86 to #85 - collegedood (11/18/2012) [-]
differential equations is also used when designing electronics. im a junior in college right now and my professors have told me that i will use 10% of what i learn will be applicable to your job, but what 10% is all dependent on what job you get for which company.

please dont even try that weak **** on me
User avatar #77 to #27 - collegedood (11/17/2012) [-]
im going to college for industrial engineering and math with a minor in computer science. this is a differential equation problem where you have to convert a step function into a forcing function then transform it into the laplace universe so you have the ability to solve it.
if you think this **** is weak then tell me what the answer is.

I empathize with you, brother. As a biology/chemistry major and physics minor, it does annoy me that the engineering students at my uni brag so much, when I work just as hard. I don't have to brag about the classes I take. I take the classes because I LIKE them. You have to start the conversation with me to even get me to talk about the classes, because, like engineering classes, my classes are NOTHING SPECIAL. It's not like engineering is the pinnacle of difficulty. It's applied physics. I get the sense that people are now majoring in engineering because it's "cool". Sure, you'll make a good chunk of change, but I'll be in a lab somewhere doing what I love. I might not make as much, or I might make much more, but I don't give a **** , because I have a thirst for knowledge and discovery, and that's all I need to feel fulfilled. A science major is no better than a music major. The music major is better than the science major, if he/she has a passion for music, and the science major just wants recogition, and vice versa.

TL;DR: No major is any better than any other major. Do what you love and **** everybody else.
#80 to #63 - sometimeswefuck ONLINE (11/18/2012) [-]
dont get me wrong, i love my study. but i hate people just boast about what they study because of exactly what you said, they think its "cool", or they want to show off.

i know i replied twice, but read both lol =P
#78 to #63 - sometimeswefuck ONLINE (11/17/2012) [-]
yea but if someones telling im not working as ******* hard? yeah right, im gonna tell them straight up exactly what im taking.
#81 to #78 - diqface (11/18/2012) [-]
I get what you mean. I will defend what I'm trying to do. I hate when someone talks to me like I don't work as hard. My friend is literally doing engineering for the money, and he brags about it all the time. It gets on my nerves. He looks down on my other friend, who is a music major. He told me "I hope he has fun delivering pizzas". But you know what? The music major said "I don't care if I have to deliver pizzas inbetween gigs or until I get a teaching job, I'll get to do what I love, and he (the engineer) will wake up one day and hate his job and his life. Sure, he'll have more money and more things, but I'll still be happier". It's not like engineers are any more special than anyone else. No one should brag. Bragging means you're doing something for the attention. People like us, we don't brag, because we do what we do for US. Sorry you got red thumbed to oblivion, lol.
