actually it was more like

state: "they're NOT making slavery illegal, but won't allow slavery in any new state added to the union, thus guaranteeing that the non slavery states will have a larger voting block in the federal government, completely screwing the agrarian states which currently rely on slavery to provide a large majority of food for the entire country , and we think that new states entering the union should have the right to decide for themselves by popular vote, and we don't think that having the federal government block statehood applications for any potential states unless they agree to be slavery free? **** that, we're leaving."

federal: we can't let you leave our country because we rely on you for food and other goods and services you provide for us, even though we've structured our government to guarantee that you will have diminished federal representation (kinda like the way england treated the colonies before the war for independence.)

history- never quite as simple as the sound bite would suggest.

that's like saying columbine happened because some kids shot up a school. the southern states seceded from the union and formed a confederacy in reaction to the northern states refusing to allow them to be adequately represented in the federal system and by disallowing slavery as a federal decision instead of a state choice further strengthening the northern/federal power base.

Actually, the civil war was about states rights vs. federal rights. Slavery was just the major right they were talking about. Licoln went into office with no plans to abolish slavery, his main goal was to keep the union together. When he realized that was impossible, he thought " **** it, lets free them" (don't quote me on that).

And as I've said before, these petitions for succession are all ceremonial, it is just people showing displeasure that their guy lost (even though he lost fair and square, and won the popular vote, meaning most of the country wanted him instead of Romney).

True, and the emancipation proclamation freed all the slaves in states in open rebellion. Meaning all slaves in the north were still slaves, Lincoln freed the slaves where he couldn't even really free them. Freedom for the rest came later. Although Lincoln did establish the legal precedent that states could not leave the union.

you're right but the reason he made it about slavery was so the union had a reason to fight because at first most of the northern states were like "who the **** cares? let them go."
