Is darkness the absence of light, or is light the absence of dark?
User avatar #13 to #10 - chucknorrisTHEGAME (11/09/2012) [-]
Darkness is the absence of light. When you get absolute dark, there is no light, and you cannot get darker than that. But you can always get brighter by adding more light.
Or something like that, I learned it a long time ago
User avatar #14 to #13 - kanatana (11/09/2012) [-]
Did you know that at one point, the ancient Egyptians actually believed that light came from out of the eyes, instead of the other way around?

And on another note, just how the hell did FJ get so philosophical, all of a sudden?
User avatar #15 to #14 - chucknorrisTHEGAME (11/09/2012) [-]
I did not know that. I learned something new today! Thanks for that!

And I'm not sure, but I don't mind it once in a while, I think it's cool.
User avatar #16 to #15 - kanatana (11/09/2012) [-]
Yeah, it is cool, huh? There are some surprisingly intelligent people on here, when they aren't being racist homophobes who would murder Justin Bieber if given the chance.

Etc.
User avatar #17 to #16 - chucknorrisTHEGAME (11/09/2012) [-]
There are indeed! I know a lot of people hated the political posts and comments (they got tiresome for me, too, after a while) but I found a lot of people really knew what they were talking about and made good points.
Plus I enjoy when I learn random facts from comments, like the Egyptian thing.

Yup. Remember the science fad a while ago? Probably the single coolest period we've had on FJ in a long time.

So many people geting all ``darkness is absence of light blah blah blah``.
We know, he know...everyone knows that. He is comedy/fantasy writer and his quote cant be taken as scientific fact so stop trying to disprove it.

Seconded. I have one copy of each kind at any time, so I have an extra to give friend who never read it.

I knew Pratchett looong before Gaiman, and I discovered Gaiman through this. To think that I was just looking for more Pratchett, and doubtfully grabbed this book. Oh, boy, I am so glad I did.

That is the first and only book i have read by either author, and because i loved it, i collected a bunch of their other books * a whole shelf in my bookcase* ... now instead of wasting time on FJ, i could be reading.

(in my defense i have tons of books i have yet to read, i don`t know where to start and then i just give up and go online.)
#69 to #68 - HOtaconE (11/10/2012) [-]
Always nice to meet a fellow book-lover.

My favorite Discworld "sub-series" is anything focused on Death. I just love the guy. Mort is definitely a favorite.

Now Gaiman, I didn't read a lot by him. Anansi Boys and American Gods only.

I recently got into Brent Weeks' Night Angel trilogy, though, and about to check out his other stuff.

I love the series following the watch. The mental image of Detritus silently holding his helmet after Cuddy died is, to this day, one of the saddest things I can imagine.

That's real philosophical 'n' **** , Terry, but dark don't travel. Dark is just the absence of light, light being the tiny visible range of the electromagnetic spectrum to which our eyes are attuned. Much the same as cold does not flow, darkness does not move.

On a quantum scale, light is composed of photons. There is no quantum of darkness. Darkness doesn't travel and thus has no speed. Another way to think of it is that darkness is a property of space that is diminished by the presence of EM radiation.

That's fine and all, but this is light on a flat planet sitting on the backs of four elephants that stand on the shell of a giant turtle flying through space. There's a strong chance science does not apply in such a location.

The speed of dark is the same as the speed of light, since it occurs whenever light leaves, which leaves at the speed of light.

Rocks exist in Northern Arizona and no matter how fast I run there they will be there before me, but if you think that means that those rocks are "faster" than me then you are an interesting person.

#42 - probablynaked (11/10/2012) [-]
Darkness is an ABSENCE of light. This is like saying "'nobody' beats me in a race, therefore 'nobody' is faster than me". Also, darkness is quite pathetic, having fled from light in every circumstance throughout recorded and non-recorded history; to play off of the personification used by the author of this particular quotation.
