Im from Puerto Rico and personally I don't think most of the people really know what would come of being a state. Moreover, the republican party, which is called PNP, didnt count an almost 1 million votes who voted against becoming a state, which would have turned into a "we dont want to become a state" . Politics here is really just a bunch of people trying to get their pockets full of the people's money

I am from Puerto Rico and well I can tell you two things:
1. Not everyone wants to become a state. Hell, there are more people here that voted on not becoming a state. There are agreements and disagreements towards both options.
2. I find it funny how the majority of the citizens who want to become a state have neither been to the states or speak English. Sure they can try to do their investigation when it comes to that matter, but let's face it, some of them are filled with this fantasy that they states is all paradise and fabulous living... However, they are missing the fact that it's painted in pretty colors and they forget the cons to it like being forced to leave certain aspects that we withhold. I am not saying we become completely like the US (look at Hawaii).

Puerto Rico's already a territory of the US, and they get to vote on statehood and have. At present they're mostly autonomous and don't pay US federal taxes. They're also not represented in Congress and can't vote for President (though they can vote on each party's nominee for President).

This is not the same as annexing foreign territory.
