Exactly!! A gun is too easy since it's basically point and pull. I know I'd rather watch two people cut each other to pieces in the street than hear bang and then it be over.

Depends on the person carrying the firearm. Most responsible open carriers give off a much more authoritative look, and seem to be respectable people. However, seeing some younger, thuggish-looking person open carrying with little respect for their demeanor and appearance can be quite unnerving...

If you're uncomfortable, just save up and get a firearm yourself (assuming you live somewhere that allows you to own one) so you'll be safer.

#550 to #352 - harryblazer (11/07/2012) [-]
because there are those that feel a ccw isnt enough and that to gain maximum respect from strangers and show off how under control they are of a weapon, they need to display it openly

#419 to #18 - capslockwut (11/07/2012) [-]
History already speaks for itself - V-tech, Colombine, post-office shootings (and know the Aurora theatre massacre) - these are all agreed upon to be some of the worse shootings, and they're all in places where guns were not allowed. Do you think a criminal with the intent to kill is going to see a sign that says "no guns allowed" and just say "Oh well, let me try the next store". No. Gun laws only limit how much we can defend ourselves.

Criminals do not follow gun control laws.
#531 to #18 - fractalius (11/07/2012) [-]
When it comes down to it, I don't give a **** if you want to buy a pistol, or a hunting shotgun, etc. but these gun fanatics are arguing that they want to be able to have Military Grade Assasult rifles in their homes.

What POSSIBLE ******* reason could you want to have an AR-15 or an M16A1 for ANYTHING other than killing someone?

Besides those annoying ass pigeons of course. But a simple pistol will do the trick

It happens more often than you think. I live in Canada, we have very large forests that tend to contain bears.

And not just bears, what are you going to do when some thug is coming at you with a knife?
User avatar #32 to #28 - arnoldbusk (11/06/2012) [-]
How about:

A) Stay out of the ******* forest if it containts huge creatures waiting to kill you.

B) Make it possible to carry firearms with a hunters license, like in every other country.

You can carry a weapon in all states with a permit. It is like a hunting license but for everywhere.
User avatar #107 to #18 - xxxdemongirl (11/06/2012) [-]
The countries and states with looser gun laws actually see a decrease in violent crimes when compared with really strict places. I would assume that it's because of the risk to the criminal. With looser gun laws comes the inevitability that more people will carry one, and therefore, a criminal would be afraid of his/her life ending at the hand of someone with a legally obtained weapon.
I do, however, believe that gun owners should be obliged to undergo annual psychological examinations to keep their weapon, to make absolutely sure that they are stable enough to carry one. I also believe that even open carriers should get a permit, but a free permit, that can only be renewed after this evaluation by a psychologist.
It's the people that aren't responsible with their weapons that you should hate, not the weapons themselves.
User avatar #332 to #107 - imyourdaddy (11/06/2012) [-]
Everyone who approves of less gun control holds the delusion of a bad guy busting in to rob and rape the household until the head of the house heroically guns down the criminal like an old school western flick. Unfortunately this not how most gun murders occur. It usually an argument, something involving money, and drama. The scenario I mentioned above rarely happens but the chances of the same head of household who guns down the criminal is more likely to shoot some guy who owes him money.
User avatar #375 to #107 - tjcomics (11/06/2012) [-]
You have to have a license and training to do it. And if they do go into a psychologically ill state, normally, the license and gun is taken away.
User avatar #552 - durkadurka (11/07/2012) [-]
Gun ownership isn't about shooting every person who tries to mess with you. It's about making yourself a difficult target, someone people don't want to mess with.

Like bullies picking on the weakest kids, criminals exploit the weakest targets.

Maybe everyone should get a poncho, spurs, and a horse, too. Then everyone can go to the saloon with their guns and drink. Then someone will call another person out, and they'll have a duel at midday.
-
Seriously, what year is it? 1880? We don't need to brandish our weapons in public anymore to prevent Native Americans from ambushing our wagons. Concealed carry should be enough, shouldn't it?

Because your grandmother knows how to fire a gun? Your grandmother can't be overpowered? Your grandmother won't be seen as more of a threat by anybody that sees her gun and takes appropriate action to neutralize that threat? Your grandmother is fully capable of having somebody else's blood on her conscience? Your grandmother is fully capable of effectively assessing a situation under stress and won't mistake somebody else firing a gun as a threat, i.e. if somebody was shooting a mugger and she thought he was a murderer?

Concealed carry should be more than enough (I'll apply for my license in just over 1 year, by the way). We're not a god damn post-apocalyptic society yet. Why do people feel the need to brandish their weapons in public? It just makes everyone else uneasy. Some people are terrified of guns and would immediately walk the other way if they saw you.

That's exactly the reason why. It's a deterrent. If you see someone with a gun on their hip, odds are you're not going to **** around with them or around them.
User avatar #408 to #347 - rmoran (11/06/2012) [-]
The people afraid of guns aren't the ones committing crimes with them. If you're a small-framed person carrying an exposed weapon (the kind of people that would need that sort of defense), someone bigger than you could easily take control of it before you have any reason to unholster it.
User avatar #344 to #325 - chezburgadominator (11/06/2012) [-]
The way I see it, walking around with a gun in public is like saying "Hey I want attention", you want people to think if they ever try to mess with you there's a potential chance for them to just get mad enough to shoot you.
