My dad's side of the family is from there. Apparently where my dad grew up, it was OK to beat up gay people and send kittens down a river.

My dad's a sick **** .

Those things are only partially true,I lived there my whole live and I'm still living there.
Yugoslavians ( Serbians*,Bosnians,Croatians,etc... ) are very civilized people, manipulated by nobody other than American government and European union, constantly getting harassed by US media which states that we are uncivilized apes, species of murderers and war criminals. We are,as many other countries, just a home to many, many unintelligent individuals that are manipulated by media.
Stop watching TV.

Im curious as to why you think its Americas fault.

Do you have a valid reason to say this, back it up if you do. Or are you simply blaming the easiest target?
To be fair, the revolutions going on in your country (countries now i suppose) in the 90's left lasting images. But for the few years I lived in America the only time I saw your country on TV was in a documentary about Yugo's (the car.)

We had a couple of assholes leading the army, that I can say.I'm not blaming America,to be honest,I'm one of the rare Serbs that loves America,I just hate to see posts like the one above stating that we kill kittens and legaly beat up gay people on the streets.
All of those things are FORBIDDEN BY LAW in Serbia, they always were.
Fighting in general and slaughtering domestic animals was never legal.
Yes it does happen for a gay man to get beaten up in the middle of the city by a brainless retard with a baseball bat.But the guy asked for it.He proudly stood up,blocked the main street in Belgrade and wrote : "I'm a proud gay man" on his forehead, then walked around without purpose.Should I block a street to show everyone that I'm straight?
No,I don't have anything against homosexuals,I just think that they should keep it to themselves and dress appropriately.

It's the goverments fault for not educating poeple. History books in all ex-yugoslavian countries are filled with bias and 19. century pseudo-historic nonsence (i should know, i study history) while the scientific comunity is disregarded from deciding what should be taught in schools.
