Phobia is not just being afraid of something, it's being afraid of something beyond norm. Phobias interfere with your everyday life, they are irrational.
Yes, it's fine to be afraid of falling down, however, it's not ok to be afraid of looking out a third floor window and expecting the building to fall. That is irrational.

I bet none of you here have actual arachnophobia. If you did, you wouldn't be able to wear shorts, walk around house bare-foot and even look at a spider without crying hysterically and running out of your house as if there is a rapist inside.

I'm only barefoot when naked. I have a fear of stepping on a bug and it biting my tootsies.
Nobody wears shorts where I live.
Last time I seen a spider at my doorway, I paced back and forwards with my head in my hands, in tears and screaming as I needed to **** but I didn't want to walk past it. I eventually ran through the door with a small umbrella and a hat on, screaming.

you might have arachnophobia then
User avatar #18 to #14 - mads (11/03/2012) [-]
Wrong.
There are different intensities to a phobia. I have arachnophobia because I can be near spiders without flinching or haveing an intense fear (which is still arachnophobia) I also have claustraphobia because if i am in an enclosed space (or even feel like I am) I panic and freeze (beyond my control).
There are different levels and intensities of fear, just because yours isnt extreme doesn't mean you do not have it
#21 to #18 - anon (11/03/2012) [-]
First off, a Phobia is defined as an irrational fear. As there is no rational reason to be afraid of whatever it is you're afraid of.
Like: Amathophobia, a fear of dust. There is no rational reason to be afraid of dust..

Second; my sister has had Arachnophobia her whole life, she went to a psychiatrist for some time, and her fear was reduced. She can now see a spider without going ******* , but she won't go near it.
User avatar #24 to #21 - mads (11/03/2012) [-]
well irrational in context, as agraphobia is the fear of sexual abuse, not something irrational. However someone with agraphobia is scared of being sexually abused EVERYWHERE and by everyone. So the defininition is context based. And arachnophobia can appear in many ways. I know someone who isn't affraid of spiders, as in he can pick them up and not care. But he has the fear that they will crawl into his mouth when he sleeps. That is still arachnophobia.

By the way I just love that agoraphobia and agraphobia are so close but mean two completely different things.
Agoraphobia= fear of open spaces
Agraphobia= fear of being sexually abused

And just a question, would you consider the fear of the dark to be a phobia?

Hyster is actually the Greek word for uterus, so when you use the word hysterically the technical definition means "like a uterus"

dictionary.reference.com/browse/hyster-
User avatar #246 to #195 - oneeyedfreak (11/03/2012) [-]
It's driven from the word "uterus" because people in past thought that disturbance in force womb caused hysterical fits.

Arachnophobia is rather irrational, most spiders can't do you any harm... unless you live in australia that is
User avatar #100 to #74 - EdwardNigma ONLINE (11/03/2012) [-]
My cousin has Arachnophobia. If she spots the smallest spider, she ******* runs out of the room. Like full blown sprints the **** out and refuses to re-enter that half of the house until the spider is dead.

It's pretty fun to watch, actually.

It is an irrational fear if it disturbs with your daily life. Most people are afraid of falling from extreme heights. The phobia comes in when someone is afraid to go into a tall building when it is safe like the person before me said or they are afraid to climb a ladder. Also to have a phobia there must be extreme anxiety. Feeling uncomfortable about heights isn't a phobia, breaking down crying, going hysterical, and hiding from real life is. This goes for all phobias.
#93 - tiberioustyphr (11/03/2012) [-]
A fear of heights is Irrational, however fear of Falling is Evolutionary.

Arachnophobia is also Irrational, seeing how most spiders are small enough to fit under a shoe and most aren't immune to insecticide.
User avatar #98 to #93 - pepemex ONLINE (11/03/2012) [-]
We fear heights because we might fall. It's the same thing.

Well that's like fearing all brown people because they might be terrorists.
People that are afraid of heights are afraid to go a couple floors up on mall when in reality i think the chances of structural failure is 1/100000

Something is only a phobia when the fear is irrational like Acrophobia is when you're in a tall building and look outside and start hyperventilating because u realized how high you are. If you are on a dilapidated, unstable bridge and you have to cross it you will most likely be scared, that isn't Acrophobia that is just a logical fear of something potentially dangerous.
User avatar #169 to #162 - snowshark (11/03/2012) [-]
Indeed. Same with Arachnaphobia. It is the fear of 'all' spiders. My sister's is so powerful that she can't watch the second Harry Potter move (she's also got a phobia of snakes).

The fear is there even when the threat is not. She's even terrified of tiny spiders.

Why did 'they' misuse the phobia ending when inventing the word homophobia. If you don't like gays, doesn't mean you're scared of them ...

If someone calls something racist when it is actually just a stereotype it really bothers me, and it happens all the time. For example: black people liking KFC is a stereotype and everyone calls it racist.

racism is discrimination directed towards a specific race
User avatar #168 to #163 - teoferrazzi (11/03/2012) [-]
if stereotypes inform the way I act, then I will commit acts of racism.
if I say 'I hate the jews', even though I am not discriminating against jews, chances are
if I had my way I would do something to hurt the jews. the two go together.
if you say 'black people like KFC' then this might inform your judgement of a black individual before you even know them. perhaps you'll get him some fried chicken, and he's more of a cheeseburger guy.
lame example but essentially the same thing
User avatar #206 to #163 - Ruspanic (11/03/2012) [-]
Racism is the belief that the inherent genetic characteristics of a race significantly influence behavior and achievement, and usually also that that makes some races naturally superior to others.

Discrimination may be motivated by racism, but racism itself is a belief, not an action.

It's not that the fear itself is irrational, it's that you fear it irrationally.

Yes, you should be cautious on a precipice, but that doesn't mean that you should have a panic attack.
