uhm.. originally, the vikings came from sweden, norway and denmark. and when the vikings existed, there were no borders, at least not as the countries we have now, so there's nothing as an islandic or a danish viking.. and they would never call them self vikings, that word would refer to some kind of pirate and were not used too much in the nordic language. Though people in the area of england would say "viking" about robbers from the northeast.. and iceland is where?

There is nothing Viking about Denmark... Vikings come from the north, Norway and Iceland.. In the time of the Vikings, the norwegian once went to Ireland, took some women, and on they're way to Iceland dropped some people of at The Faroe Islands, Thus creating the Faroese.. We have very similar language to Icelandic, because both come from the former old northern language know as " Nørrona ".

User avatar #66 to #64 - peacerock (11/02/2012) [-]
I think the people in Greenland are related to Sami ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sami_people ) in Norway. Sami lives in the northern parts of Norway, Sweden and Finland so they could have traveled from there to Greenland but I not sure.

The only sad thing is, The Faroe Islands were given to the Kings House in Denmark as a gift about year 800, so we had to ( by law ) read, and write in Danish right until late 1800's when a good man took a stand, and started teaching Faroese in schools in written form, instead of just spoken.. The log said he could not do this, so every class of " Føroykst " the teacher and the students sat outside of school, thereby not breaking any laws. :)

Iclendic is the closest language to the norse language, which norway spoke in the viking era. so when norway dropped em off, thhey kept most of the ancient language and some of the words and traditions are still there today.

Please remind me how our class was reading saga's last week.
The saga's are translated to norwegian/swedish/finnish/danish and probably many other languages too.

PS: Icelandic is probably about 89% old Norse. And we can learn Norwegian, English, German, French, Spanish and obviously we all know Swedish/Danish when we learn Norwegian.

Get your facts straight.

What I'm trying to say is that studies aint allways correct, and everyone is norway/sweden/denmark have the chance to learn more than 2 languages is school.

are you for real or are you just playing stupid?:P
I know some icelandic and it's not that far from swedish and since I'm interested in languages it gets easier. That meme you used "blanda upp", it's exactly the same in swedish. I can see what an icelandic word could be in swedish, since I've studied just a little bit of the language sand we have the same base/root of the words. As you say "èg [jeg] heiti ..." I would say "jag heter". Can you see the similarity? Same in the first comment, "ó gu∂" is "å gud". And as an icelander I guess you knew that icelandic is basically old norweigan and norway is just next to us;)

No, we don't only learn english and swedish in school and I study at the university, I can choose whatever language I want.

Yeah, I can pick my potatoes and you can go pick up some rocks... son

haha of course I can choose, my friend is studying icelandic at the university right now? well, I guess you know better than me then, since you've lived in Malmö for a year.

I don't think I need to "discuss" this anymore, you're just acting stupid, it feels like I'm talking with a child. I'm trying to explain that we should look at the similarities and not the difference, but it feels like you hated me from the very beginning. lost some faith in humanity man

haha I'm going to answer to your lack of knowledge:
Icelandic is a small language, yes, but it looks beautiful and there's a lot of swedes that want to learn it, since we can see the similarities.
Yes you can learn mandarin here. I even think you can choose it in high school.
Icelandic is in the same language family as swedish, unlike from mandarin.
Iceland and Sweden are both in the Association Norden, a cooperation between nordic countries.
Why wouldn't you be able and want to learn icelandic here?
Sweden is the most populated country of the nordic countries.
In 2004 we had over 9 million people.

You were rude, I wasn't butting. My intention was friendly, but somehow you don't like that.

I don't really see why you mention "pick some potatoes" so often.
I don't really find that insulting. As for now I'll just assume that you're but-hurt because Iceland dont have any good farmland and you probably can't grow potatoes there.

And for the record, potatoes are fking good and healthy to eat.
