OH yeah, Alicorns.

So from what I can tell, we've got a few rather concrete ideas for alicorns.

1.They're heavily magical, more magical than they are mortal; therefore their appearance can be changed via magic.
2.Their magic can also be very specific, such as with Luna with the moon & Celestia with the sun.
3.They're not born, but created, though through what method and by whom is unknown.

#1. I fully support this idea. As you pointed out with Luna and her resurgence of power between S1 E1 & her first public appearance, their magic does seem to influence their appearance. While Luna's example is enough to make it almost as factual as all this theorizing gets, I have to wonder how Celestia's hair ended up the way it was.

Prior to Luna's banishment Celestia's hair was simply pink, but afterward it's a mixture of pink, green, and blue. I believe that when she used the elements of harmony on her own and lost her link with them, they became a part of her. Or rather, a part of them did.

As we know, the Elements are extremely powerful, more powerful than any other force so far. I think that perhaps while Celestia and Luna had great links to their power, relative to the elements themselves that was a small fraction of their power. To imprison Luna, Celestia had to sever both of their connections to the elements, in the grand explosion of energy that was unleashed in the act there was a lot of left over power from the elements. A majority of this power was absorbed by Celestia herself (the rest bled off into the area, creating the hyperactive growth of the Everfree forest), changing her appearance and making her more powerful on her own, but still less powerful than she was with the elements under full control.

Which brings the (side) question: "Why are the Mane 6 not as power as the Goddesses, since they're connected to the elements now?"
Simply put: it's the same fraction of power that the sisters had, but split 6 ways, and they've had them for barely 2 years.

#2. Their magic is indeed specific to their cutie marks it seems. We have Luna, ruler of the night and all things associated with the moon; She raises and lowers the moon at dusk and dawn, and her canterlot voice (while in full use) brings about storm clouds, harsh winds, lightning, and possibly other weather conditions. Makes sense, since the moon is more inclined to changing the weather than the sun is.
Then there's Celestia, ruler of the sun and it's powerful rays. In the one use of the canterlot voice we see, she flares a great brightness and becomes something like a miniature sun. She is also believed to me more powerful than her sister Luna, even in the days that they were connected to the elements. It makes sense that she is linked to the sun in the way Luna is to the moon, since withoout a shadow of a doubt (seewhatididthere?) the sun is more powerful than the moon.

Then of course we have Cadence, whom is likely linked to the Crystal Heart in some way. I don't have much to say for her, since we know next to nothing about the Crystal Heart.

But then....we have Queen Chrysalis, of a different species that doesn't even have cutie marks, yet she stands out from the rest of the changeling army in the same way the Princesses stand out from the ponyfolk.

Perhaps not technically an alicorn, but maybe she has similar qualities? Her magic is undoubtedly powerful when there is a powerful source, like Shining Armor, and her appearance is linked to the power source itself. When feeding off of Shining Armor's love, she had to disguise herself as Cadence, but what if it was partially required?

Likely she was in an overdrive level of harvesting during her time in Canterlot (Which was probably something like a week or so), binding her somewhat to the form of Cadence. With so much love (and by extension, power) intended on a certain mare, it may have slightly forced the form of Cadence upon her. Which might explain the amount of magic we see when she returns to normal, because it took so much power to break away from a longstanding illusion. Where compared to her subjects it's just a flash of green energy around them as they change form.

Though I can't say what her magic is linked to, perhaps she's simply the embodiment of envy?

To further assault you with a wall of text, let's talk about number three!

As far as I'm concerned, we don't know enough about Luna and Celestia's origins to really talk about this one. What we do know is that at some point down the line from when Equestria was founded, the pony races all made friends and started to get along, and the Sisters became the rulers of Equestria.

I'm leaning towards the side of them being made. Not by somepony however, but by the Elements of Harmony.

Weather out of thin air or from the likeness of ponies that existed at the time of their creation I can't say, but it would explain their affinity with the elements of Harmony. I'm thinking they were created during or slightly before (by a few years) Discord's terror, so that they could combat it and retain balance in Equestria.

I seem to have a lot to say about the elements....maybe I'll do an OiM for them sometime?

Okay! I think I'm done here. Great job on the post stormeye, lots of pictures even if they drifted off at the end, and it was very flavorful and enjoyable!

9/10, would show to a scientist.

I didn't even know there was a third OiM, so even though math and science is my fancy I'll see if I can add to this as well.

I had a theory a while ago about the elemental distribution, especially among Celestia and Luna, but this also involves a bit of groundwork that isn't fully developed so I'll try not to say anything too ground-breaking.

So, basically I was thinking that there are more than six elements, and they are their own entities with something akin to sapience. Celestia found all six of the Elements of Harmony during her legendary duel with Discord but I won't go into specifics. Needless to say, she banished him with the elements and took up rule over the ponies, with her little sister, Luna.

I won't go into the fight because I can't trust anyone other than myself and a friend to write that fan fiction properly.

Some time later Luna encountered the Element of Pride, part of a more powerful set that was separated long ago. Powered by her feelings towards Celestia, she locked the moon in the sky as Nightmare Moon and threatened eternal night if Celestia didn't recognize Luna as a successor.

Celestia, unable to do anything with standard Alicorn magic, had to use the Elements of Harmony to lock Nightmare Moon away. Stricken with guilt and grief over having to use such force against her own sister, Celestia separated the elements, put five in the Everfree Forest, and held onto the Element of Magic. She has since been teaching advanced magic to unicorns, in the event that her sister comes back and she isn't ready to face Nightmare Moon.

Thanks to a unique knowledge of the elements, having embodied them at some point, Celestia knew that Magic was the only element that regular ponies couldn't usually access, due to it's origin; Alicorns.

I might have something else to add later but that's all for now. Image is relevant.

Hmmm. I suppose I could mention my supposed origin of ponies?

I won't claim to know where Alicorns came from, though in my stories I am under the impression that they evolved. To each their own. Instead, I'll talk about the mane three: Pegasi, Unicorns, and Earth Ponies.

I don't like talking about some of the more ridiculous ideas I come up with, but stay with me: Discord is a God. A fallen god, but god-like nonetheless. For the sake of simplicity I'll skip to the part where he's essentially God of War and Mischief.

Discord doesn't just want to exterminate Alicorns; he wants to royally screw with them. So he takes their basic components - Knowledge, Power, Desire - and rips them apart. For each Alicorn, this forms a Unicorn, an Earth Pony, and a Pegasus, respectively.

Of course if I start getting into the reason behind Discord's ripping spree I'll have to explain the origin of the planet Equus (and Earth), the origin of Magic, the religion and society of the Alicorns, Celestia's family, the Rift, and of course the Discordian Duel that I mentioned above. I know you people may want to hear stuff like that, but I don't think it's refined enough for the public eye yet.

Give me time.

So you're saying that the Elements are correspondents to emotion, so thus there should be more Elements than the 6 we currently know of, even if they conflict.

I agree with this partially on the fact that emotion has real magical power in Equestria. (And even with the 8 minute preview of Season 3, this is emphasized even more, with what Celestia said the Crystal Empire is capable of accomplishing.) Though I think that the Elements of Harmony aren't actual embodiment of those emotions, as much as they are artifacts that respond to and amplify a set of emotions that correspond and strengthen each other within their users.

I theorize this because several instances from the show we see powerful emotions used without a physical element to strengthen it. (As described above, Nightmare Moon with her own envy, Discord with his chaotic feedback loop, [OiM 3] and Shining Armor, Candace, and Chrysalis treating Love as both an emotion and magical power.)

Though I think that if anything, Celestia and Luna were more intimately connected with the Elements of Harmony than the Mane 6 are now. By Celestia using the elements against another bearer to banish her, I believe that cut off her own connection. The emotional power of the betrayal was enough to sever Celestia's connection and deactivate the Elements.

I'm not saying the correspond to emotions, I'm saying that there are different sets of elements that represent different traits, or are contrary to them. Pride, for example, would be contrary to Humility, which would basically be between Honesty and Generosity if it was put on a scale. Or maybe Honesty and Kindness. It doesn't translate well to a scale, but the point is that the different traits should get their own sets as well.

Unfortunately for this discussion I've protected my eyes from any and all spoilers, so I really have nothing to say on the matter of Cadence.

It was about how the various pony races interacted with magic and how they were magical exactly, so no math.

And there was some Discord at the end.

Oh Celestia! That's a **** tonne of text (not just in the content, but in the comments). I would usually read this ( I do like these 'Over Thinking is Magic' things, I find them quite interesting) but my brain isn't working at the moment. Trying to think would hurt my brain (Had an exam today, My brain is bucked)
I might come back tomorrow :)

ok so first off
with starswirl the bearded(stb) in mind
i belive that he must of been a very, very, very powerful wizard who talent is magic
like that of twilights, if hes powerful enough to travel through time he must be very powerful
what of it
i think that possibly
luna and celestia (possible other names)
where his apprentaces or atleast someone of importance to him blood or other wise.
and that when discord came to change and attack equestria
it was up to him to help save it
but he realised he could not do it alone
and so he took both luna and celestia and using his great power
turned them into alicorns
they could have already had some affinitys to the moon and sun
then being amplified by the magic
or it could have been the only way to turn them into alicorns(ill get to that later)
so this would prove them being created
its obvious that they both new stb very well
celestia has an entire wing designated to stb
along with seeing power like twilight
reminded her of stb, she imidetly wanted her to be her student
probly like she was to stb and wanted a twi to become just as powerful(possibly)
and luna recognised stbs costume right away with a good memory like she also knew him well
and twilight seems to have some sortof bond with stb its possible they could have a magical link from one great power to another.

STB could have also created the elements of harmony the same way as alicorns but instead of ponys he used the jems
that could only be activated by someone who has said power
and with this we could also say that if celestia or luna would ever some how perish
there power could be reincarned into another pony

man this is long
and i cant post pics from being too new
damn it

Now for cadence
who is she?
how is she related to celestia and luna?
well what if she was not related
touching on the whole crystal pony heart thingy
what if cadence was a crystal pony
just look at the hair its the same instead of C&L's magic hair
so i say that she was a crystal pony who was charged with the protection of the heart
and turned into an alicorn by luna or celestia
and that cadence is intune with the magic of love
this shows that when becomeing an alicorn
you must have an object e.g moon, sun
and with its magic
you(the pony) and your magic are combined to its magic
hence turning(more like tuning) celestia and her body with the power of the sun and luna with the power of the moon
also why celestia is more powerful than luna
and alowing them to have full control of that object of power
possibly why luna refused to let the sun rise
instead of rasing it her self and getting rid of celestia
the more powerful the object the more powerful the alicorn
also with twilights affinity to magic her magic is greatly increased

but im getting of topic
cadence could not even be a relitive of celestia or luna
but infact supposed the last crystal pony
being what was thought to be the only one
luna and celestia turned her into an alicorn and combined her with the crystal heart
this does not mean however that she is the heart
only that she has its powers

sorry for the really long post
but i wouldn't be able to rest till i posted this or it would just stay in my head

There are moments when I hate having my fiction take my mind so much more than the Show's cannon that I can only nod and agree. I can't find any faults on my own.
