I know the soldier in the back ground of the wounded Marine picture. Colonel James Hickey, his unit captured Saddam in 2003. He and my dad are best friends. Just thought that was interesting.

As was mine, actually. He was fairly high ranking in his infantry unit, and he was injured when an artillery strike blew up the building next to him. He lived and actually even retrieved the discarded shell from it. He had it in his house until he died, and then my father sold it.
User avatar #54 to #52 - deathchain (10/26/2012) [-]
"...and then my father sold it."

awwwww.

It's a real pity, but father wasn't a nice man. Oh well. I still remember the stories.

Wasn't the photo staged? I thought it was reenacted for propaganda like the marines on iwo jima?

fun fact, that image has been altered. In the original the soviet trooper has several wrist watches on his arm.

Your grandpa was part of the invasion that pretty much ended WWII and made Hitler an hero?
That's quite an impressive war story. My grandad met up with his cousin in Egypt during WWII and they stole an Arabian guys wheelbarrow.
>mfw Your grandpa sounds more heroic than mine..

I suppose everybody had their part. Even the person who operated the least important job, cleaning the floors in the smallest home guard regiment of Britain- had he not have been there, who's to say there wouldn't have been some massive butterfly effect from which Hitler didn't kill himself and the war lasted a further 10 years?

I just realized the dude found a way out but ****** a girl instead of helping other prisoners. Awesome post though and yes I still think he's awesome.
User avatar #48 to #42 - DrBobsPatient (10/26/2012) [-]
If one prisoner escaped, 20 would get shot. If they get captured, they'd get put in the cooler or shot. Most prisoners were too weak to make it anywhere else. He probably brought food and stuff back, but the germans made the PoWs accountable for their friendlies.
User avatar #49 to #48 - cupotruth ONLINE (10/26/2012) [-]
Well that makes up for it.

If you make another, this should be in it. This depicts South African Double Amputee Oscar Pistorius and Kirani James of Grenada trading cards. Kirani James came in second and moved on, but Pistorius would not move on. So James wanted to switch so Oscar would advance.
User avatar #37 to #36 - icanflyy (10/26/2012) [-]
******James came in first.
#60 to #36 - robertito (10/26/2012) [-]
no, they just switched as a sign of comradery, it wasn't so he would advance. I watched this live. it was great.
User avatar #140 to #60 - icanflyy (10/28/2012) [-]
I interpreted it to be that, but yours sounds more reasonable.
