It doesn't say they're not natural, it just says they're an abomination. As well as pigs, defecating, periods, clothing made from two different fabrics, planting two different seeds in the same field and picking up sticks on the Sabbath.

But slavery, human and animal sacrifice, stoning people to death, slaughtering entire cities and keeping the virgin girls for yourself and - to an extent - rape are all totally fine.

for the pigs it says that because they are extremely unhealthy for you and cause diseases and sickness over time, it's because they have no sweat glands. So all poisons and toxic gasses in their system aren't released

Doesnt say even half of what youre saying...
says laying with another man is an abomination

doesnt say rape or slavery (in the sense youre saying) or periods or pooping is bad.

the other **** is old laws seperating the jews from the pagans.

You haven't read your bible, have you? The books that say homosexuality (at least among men) is an abomination are the same books that say one shouldn't be allowed to perform even menial tasks on the Sabbath, plant two different seeds in the same field, wear clothing made from two different fabrics and also outlines the conditions for slavery - including who you can enslave and how hard you can beat them. And while rape isn't a crime punishable by death, it makes it easy for a man to make whatever woman he pleases his wife since all he has to do is rape a woman and give her father a dowry before being required to marry her (since a girl who's lost her virginity is practically useless to the father).

And the cleanliness laws & rituals surrounding defecating and periods are absurd to say the least.

No...he really didn't. I absolutely love hearing that Jesus got rid of all the old laws, yet many of the gospels specifically say the old laws are timeless and are in effect and Jesus specifically says he did not come to remove the laws/prophecies of the old testament but to fulfill them.

Pigs : Never says pigs are an abomination, in Leviticus God tells the Jews not to eat pork(or any hooved animal for that matter) because it is an "unclean" animal. Old Testament, is no longer in place.
Defacating : I have never read where defecating is an abomination and I'm a ministry major, I would love to see a verse for this one.
Period : It speaks about "associating" with a woman during her period, some people believe the way it is speaking it means "to have sex" others think any form of interaction, but periods themselves are completely natural an abomination
Clothing from two fabrics : What the pagans wore, and was against Jewish law because they were to be seperated.
Two seeds in the same field : Again, not an abomination, just a decree, I do not know why this one was banned in Jewish law though, Leviticus 19:19 talks about it
Picking up sticks on the Sabbath : Any work was against the Jewish law on the Sabbath because it was set apart, Jesus cleared this decree up though when he speaks about how it was taken to the extreme by the pharisees and is more of a guide then a law, meaning you should try to avoid physical labor, but there is exceptions.

Now for the "totally fine" things of the Bible
Slavery : Usually paying off a debt. Never once is it looked at as a positive thing.
Human Sacrifice : Only one example of this that I can think of was with Abraham and his son and God stopped it before it happened, only told him to do it to test Abraham and never actually sacrificed a human.
Animal Sacrifice: Something had to take the punishment of sins... Better animals then humans I guess
Stoning: Punishment for severe breaking of the law - Equivalent to modern day electric chair, also Jesus doesn't encourage stoning.
Slaughtering Cities: Every city that was slaughtered was being punished by God because "There was not a single righteous person in the entire city"
Virgin Girls for yourself: I don't know what you mean for this one

TL;DR, Everything is out of context
User avatar #278 to #248 - vladhellsing (10/25/2012) [-]
You haven't read your bible very carefully, have you? There is no context in which owning another human being as property is justified, or pelting someone with rocks to death for collecting sticks on the sabbath, or sacrificing your daughter as an offering to god for granting victory (as Jephthah did), or slaughtering entire cities - including their children and livestock - and keeping their young virgin girls for yourselves simply because they didn't believe in the same invisible sky daddy you did.

And don't say "that **** doesn't count because it's in the Old Testament" because so are the Ten Commandments you hold so dear - which aren't even that moral to begin with. And Jesus didn't overrule any of it either, in fact he specifically said that not a single "jot or tiddle" of the law would be changed until all has come to pass.

Thats partially the old testament, there's a bible story where jesus says that humans dont have the right to stone anyone. somewhere in john along the lines of: "He who is without sin among you, let him throw the first stone at her."

i used to be a christian, deal with it :P
User avatar #42 to #30 - mechaemperor (10/25/2012) [-]
But Jesus says his father's law has always been and will always be absolute... making the Old Testament valid forever.

Now, since it is all a load of bollocks, you need not worry about your religion being such an anti-humanistic ideology. Just live your life, be good to others for everyone's sake.
#53 to #42 - yomommabinshoppin (10/25/2012) [-]
You do realize Jesus died so that you could do stuff and still repent for your sins, so he isn't going to punish you for doing anything wrong as long as you ask for forgiveness from all your sins and try to avoid sinning
User avatar #155 to #53 - mechaemperor (10/25/2012) [-]
I don't know what you're trying to debate with that post, but whatever.

1. Jesus MAY have existed.
2. Jesus MAY have died for our sins
3. The sacrifice MAY have worked.

Also, the definition of "sin" is very ambiguous, and the whole "asking for forgiveness and repenting" is a major loophole, because people who act wrongly and then ask forgiveness are well aware that their actions are evil in a certain context, yet those who act wrongly and are unaware will not be saved because they'll not repent, because they do not know they're being wrongful, and they're the ones who'd deserve forgiveness more than others.

Religious morality is outdated and very crude.

There actually was a real person named Jesus. But different people believe different things about what he did. He's as real as any other famous historic person. I believe that Muslims don't think he's the son of god but Christians do. There are records of Jesus like any other person too. I don't think scientists can argue he was a fake person because there are facts proving he is real.
User avatar #252 to #184 - robertolee (10/25/2012) [-]
Jesus may have been a real person but the 'miracles' he performed have been around long before he existed for example 'Horus' the son of Osiris. Mithra also. These were both rumoured to have been born on 25th of december, both born of a virgin, both had 12 disciples, both performed the miracles that jesus apparently did. Jesus was just a story, he was another Horus/Mithra, the story of the son of a god born of a virgin has been around long before judaism and christianity.
User avatar #288 to #155 - midlight (10/25/2012) [-]
also the old "so i stole a bike and asked for forgiveness" argument is silly, you have to do all in your power to make amends, as in give the bike back otherwise it doesn't count
User avatar #65 to #30 - ctsasquatch (10/25/2012) [-]
Or there's the idea that Jesus was actually misquoted there and he was really saying that none of that group were Ballistari, so they had no right to judge.

(Ballistari 'stone throwers' were allegedly an ancient sect of wise 'sinless' people used to settle disputes. They would pass judgement by forming a circle and then tossing a stone, either white or black, into the center of the circle. Like the Knights Templar, legend says the early Church betrayed and slaughtered each and every last Ballistari and cleansed their name from virtually every record. Allegedly.

Well, I meant it's "partially" old testament, because the majority of the anti-gay messages are there, and they are significantly more brutal - as in, they need to be slaughtered. NT groups them together with adulterers and the like.
#64 to #34 - anon (10/25/2012) [-]
Old Testament is Jew territory. Jews generally aren't anti-gay. Maybe they understand their book better?
User avatar #62 to #1 - McFuckUp (10/25/2012) [-]
It doesn't say periods are an abomination, it says not to have sex with a woman on her period because it will make you unclean. I have no idea what you're talking about with the defecating.
As far as the other laws, those are all laws in Leviticus that were given to the Jews so that they could separate themselves from the Pagans at the time.
Slavery is also taken out of context, minus Egyptian slavery (from which the Jews were eventually freed), because back in those days slaves usually were working off a debt.
As for stoning and allowing virgin girls to be raped, I have no rebuttal. There's a bible story where angels come to a city and go to this dude's house and a bunch of dudes form the city come to his house and say "Bring those men out so we can have sex with them," and he says "No don't do that, but here are my virgin daughters. Do as you please with them."

TL;DR, yeah yeah I know.

User avatar #290 to #194 - McFuckUp (10/25/2012) [-]
