Well, the money has to go somewhere, AKA, the bank account that belongs to the person which has the machine, so they wouldn't get out of it so easily, given that it is registered on the robber's name, and there would be data regarding his adress and stuff.

With the proper legal methods, one could "block" the payments, so the money that will come to the bank account couldn't be "moved", so it would be safe to say they would get paid back.

Pic unrelated.

"Give me £200 form your card now!"
"If I give you £250 can I get cash-back?"
"I don't see why not... Yeah, sure."

Robbing just got a hell of a lot more civilized.
I'm OK with this...
#26 to #12 - beerterror (10/24/2012) [-]
Apart from obviously joking manner of the post - this is ******* possible. And if the robber is quick and smart enough, he can get the money out of the bank and disappear quicker than the victim can block and pursue the money-transfer.

That's not the most encouraging perspective.

Here, take this, you have unupdated version ^^
User avatar #29 to #26 - Faz (10/24/2012) [-]
apart from it would show whos bank account your money went into on your bank statement so you would then know the robbers identity.
User avatar #31 to #29 - beerterror (10/24/2012) [-]
Well I guess it's not that hard to create a bank account under a false identity. I'm not sure though, as I'm not from US (and I think we're speaking about US now).
User avatar #34 to #31 - Faz (10/24/2012) [-]
Im from the UK and its near impossible to create a bank account under a false identity.
User avatar #39 to #34 - beerterror (10/24/2012) [-]
Ok, good to know. I guess I may exaggerated the problem too much. But still, I think that criminals would find a way to make their way.

Also the money transaction can be tracked, dont think they will ever want to change from 'cold hard cash' its at least the safest way so far.

I was going to ask if this is real, but I saw that it is a few posts down.... This is one of the worst ideas I have ever heard of as far as security goes (but it would be convenient).

iOS isn't exactly 100% secure and skimming is already a problem with hard coded Eftpos terminals..... if you know a about encryption and electronics it's really not hard if you have physical access to the machine to record the transaction and then run a brute force decryption

Now you can run your card directly through something that can be "hacked" to skim your details in an instant.... in fact the iphone could even do the decrypting... mind you it'd be pretty slow.

Now I don't normally wear a tin foil hat (I don't even often run an antivirus) but this idea has the potential for a colossal *********** once someone works out what they can do with the card reader and a jailbroken iphone.. eg a shop keeper, does his normal transactions, skims the card's details and sells them, it's known to happen.

The only idea worse than this is using NFC or RFID for transactions... you don't even have to be close to the phone or credit card to activate it... If you increase the wattage on an RFID reader, and are able to direct the electromagnetic waves at a credit card and receive them... you can steal credit card information at a distance of maybe 5-30 meters depending on which part of the RFID you need.

aww **** ***** , doesn't this ever occur to them? or do the benefits outweigh the risks?
User avatar #150 to #36 - billybong (10/25/2012) [-]
most phones have USB ports in them now days (via Micro USB adapters), so I guess if skimmers wanted to they'd do it anyway.

But nobody's going to trust some guy with a dodgy looking card reader attached to his phone.... they will however, trust any idevice with this attached
