It's implied to those who actually watch/listen to the news instead of those just hearing all of this information for the first time during debates.

The more words they use, the more seconds they take up, and that's one thing they don't have a lot of in debates.

While Syria is a geographically beneficial to Iran as it provides access to Lebanon and Palestine, it in no way is an economic partner through the sea. Why would the Iranians ship their oil overland through dangerous Iraq when there is a perfectly good Strait of Hormuz to go through? Romney was... a quarter right? Either way, it was stupid of him to say.
TL;DR Romney still made an oopsie
User avatar #17 to #3 - Mahazama (10/23/2012) [-]
Because Iran sends all of their oil for export in trucks all the way out to Syria, right?
Oh wait, they don't. They use the Persian/Arab Gulf to send oil (their only export anyone gives a **** about) out through the Straight of Hormuz.

Okay, now i have to reword this. I was never good at geography. Romney used the term sea lightly. The mediterranean is the only port viable enough to reach the oceans that connects the world. This post is fraudulent and creates proclivity.
#127 - LtMcG (10/24/2012) [-]
He was talking about the Mediterranean. I don't even like the guy, but this is just pure cancer. Misinformed voters, misinterpreted information, and they continue to publicize this as the criticism of the candidates.

OP is an idiot. He was talking about trade routes. The bodies of water that touch Iran are not trade routes. Jesus Christ, my only prayer is that people like OP are either too young or too dumb to register to vote.
#320 to #310 - John Cena (10/24/2012) [-]
What about the straight of Hormuz, which 35% of the worlds petroleum supply passes through? I'd say that's a vital trade route.
When Romney said "the sea" I just assumed he meant the Mediterranean sea because Syria has a Mediterranean coast and Iran doesn't. Also having that as a trade route would give Iran access to Europe.
User avatar #325 to #320 - vivapinatapro (10/24/2012) [-]
Iran uses the strait as a diplomatic weapon, not for actual trade with other countries. Iran always threatens to close it off with their navy and mines whenever someone disagrees with what they want.
User avatar #326 to #325 - vivapinatapro (10/24/2012) [-]
Mostly** as a diplomatic weapon vs actual trade.
#327 to #320 - John Cena (10/24/2012) [-]
So iran would have to pay all that money just to get their products to Europe, just so they can pay more money to have to send it from Europe to America?

Syria is the only country that would allow Iran access to the Mediterranean Sea. They could easily smuggle across northern Iraq, or just have Syria do their work by proxy without actually traveling.

yes but when i wanted to go to the mediterranean sea, iran to syria
#9 - deathoftheparty (10/23/2012) [-]
Just when I think funny junk can't get any dumber you go and pull this **** . Syria is Iran's path to the Sea retards. The Caspian is a lake and it would take much longer to go through the Persian Gulf. It's like you people try to be this retarded.

Yes, Iran would love to ship all their oil overland through Iraq. Wait.. no they don't, they go through the Strait of Hormuz, which is why Hormuz is so important to us and we station navy ships there.

the caspian sea is land locked and iran has one main port at bandar e abbas...if they want to send something to india, maylasia, austrailia, etc then there isn't a problem...if the iranians want to send something to the west (italy perhaps?) then it would be a good idea to go to syria and ship from there instead of sailing around the tip of africa...

what romney said isn't that much of a **** up, but it could have been phrased better...

Iran to the coast of Syria is about 2,200 km. To travel your route, it's about 7,000 km. Which one do you think Iran would choose? 7,000 km, or 2,200 km?
#95 to #86 - lostwoodskid (10/24/2012) [-]

I trade to explain it to you like a normal human and you were just too stupid to understand.
To ship the oil 2,000 kilometers over land would cost more than 7,000 kilometers by sea.

#323 to #99 - John Cena (10/24/2012) [-]
the sea route is only a few kilometers longer, because there is a channel to the Mediterranean
