(apologies for so many comments I have on here. Content with parkour interests me)
TL;DR up ahead
Fun fact: The French only invented the term 'parkour' and basically got it more out in the world and had been put to use. Parkour had no definition but it's use has existed throughout history given other names by different cultures or no name at all as a skill of training through obstacles and was an art of desperate escape. Also. in Ireland, it was believed somewhere 206 BC or some time around there, a particular group in a rath somewhere use their fort to practice climbing and build obstacles in and out of their forts. Outside would confuse anyone attacking the fort by either tripping over the obstacles or getting lost on the way out (they would use giant stones and other natural resources as obstacles) and the villagers in the rath that had already known the art would use the similar-to-parkour skill to chase the enemies and or escape if needed to.

tl;dr: French only invented term and evolved it the fastest to get its term and pupularity. The skill (having no name at first) has been in use throughout history by many different cultures [the Irish being one example] and went through it's final evolution stage when the French happened.

Around here, the ones who do parkour are the ones who are also considered losers. And are trying to be special snowflakes.
User avatar #30 - thelonelyfeel (10/21/2012) [-]
I did parkour for 2 years and suffered 2 back injuries and a knee injury from it. I now have some bad nerve damage and have only recently gained the ability to walk properly again.
Parkour isn't as fun as it looks and most people doing all the crazy stuff have martial arts/gymnastics experience and have been doing it for 3 or more years.
User avatar #54 to #30 - omoshiroi (10/21/2012) [-]
If you injured youself so much you should have considered changing your training methods. When i started training i trained way too hard, got a knee injury and had to rest. After that, i learned to allways warm up, dont do high drops etc. Parkour isnt dangerous, training without thinking first it.. But you're right, people tend to think that just because they train PK they can do some craxzy **** that takes years to learn.

Well I pushed myself too hard doing it, and it wasn't from doing stuff that was too big for me, the back injuries were from front flips and because of them I learned I have degenetarive disc disease. And the knee injuries were from my outer leg muscles being stronger than the inner and a cyst behind a kneecap that parkour made worse.

But yes it can be really safe if you do things properly.

Some french sport that involves getting to point A to point B as fast as possible.

isn't the whole idea behind parkour, finding the hardest way to get from point a to point b
User avatar #28 to #5 - severepwner (10/21/2012) [-]
False. It's pushing the body to beyond its limits. Free running took on the name parkour for some reason.

Flippy **** is free running or tricking. Parkour is supposed to be the easiest path from point A to B, which includes jumps and vaults, which are easy if you're good at parkour.

Isn't parkour and freerunning the same thing?..
#27 to #19 - cookedspider (10/21/2012) [-]
[In case you were wondering, take it from an athlete with experience with the info below]
Parkour- Get from point A to point B the fastest way possible going through obstacles with these given techniques to overcome them; Vaults, cats, precisions, rolls, balancing and other complex techniques. Parkour teaches you to overcome obstacles. Parkour teaches you to calculate risks by understanding your own fear and to learn to overcome such obstacles.

Freerunning- People get confused with this and think they're the same. Before I go into freerunning, it is still parkour if you do a flip or some crazy trick as long as you're overcoming the obstacle and getting from point A to point B. Freerunning requires no destination of what you do. It gives you a hint in the word. "free". Practice climbing up the side of a building to grab a handhold 12 feet from the ground, let's say, and you decide to to a front flip from the cat stance from holding onto it and keep practicing over and over. Or doing back-360 flips off of something. That is freerunning.

tl;dr- They are not the same thing, can be looked at to be the same thing. Parkour is as different from freerunning as orange juice is as different from mint toothpaste.
Take it from someone with experience.
pic related, it's me giving an example of what freerunning looks like since I'm not going A->B
