I don't think it's wise to say that Earth is the only planet that will ever hold life, even if in this very moment we are alone in the universe, whose to say that before we were around there wasn't another planet teaming with life? Humans are a tiny blip on the Universe's timeline, it's a very slim chance that we exist at the same time as extra terrestrial life. Hell, maybe when we're gone there will be a planet that's slowly growing its first plants. Planets outside our solar system are on a different stage of their lives, they're not all the same age. Our sun and it's orbiting planets formed 4.5 billion years ago, yet the oldest known planet is estimated to be 12.7 billion years old. Earthen life is 3.5 - 3.6 billion years old, and humans have only been around for, what, 150,000 years? Odds are, humans will never make contact with any kind of aliens, but they do, did, will, exist.

I can't remember the average life span for a species but it's definitely over a million years. We're not even close to being done, we've accomplished this much and it's only the beginning.
