Isn't that what got us in this predicament?

No, the end of separating commercial and investment banking was.
User avatar #134 to #126 - cabbagemayhem (10/09/2012) [-]
Actually, would you like to elaborate on that? I haven't heard that theory before.
User avatar #255 to #134 - starvaggi (10/10/2012) [-]
Sure. Well, the chief regulatory reform that was instated int he great depression was called the glass-steagall banking act, which separated commercial (like, I put my money into a bank and earn interest on it) from investment (like, banks use investment money to trade stocks and derivatives and capital) banking. For a long time, banks couldn't use you money to trade with unless you invested it for that specific reason. Also, the glass-steagall banking act prevented predatory loans from being given to those who were underqualified. It was a bipartisan decision to repeal it in the 1990s, following the very optimistic economic environment created by the lower taxation of the wealthy and You need to login to view this link bubble, and there was no end in sight to most people at the time. Unfortunately, its repeal enabled these tactics to be taken advantage of the way they were in the 1920s, and caused a similar effect. Of course, the other regulations still in place and the knowledge we had of the past prevented a total collapse like before, but the same thing happened. It's important we reinstate the regulations glass-steagall contained if we are to ensure that no boom and bust cycles begin to reoccur.

Ooh. So, it would appear the banks are the prominent danger here, and separating commercial and investment banking would prevent banks from absorbing taxpayer's money after they bust on risky bets. You imply that that caused boom and bust cycles during the great depression, so separating commercial and investment banking now could have the greatest positive impact on our economy. So, you would vote for Romney, because the Obama kim jongistration is criticized for opposing reenactment of glass-steagall.

For sake of argument, the treasury secretary Timothy Geithner said he opposed it because he didn't believe the end of Glass-Steagall caused the crisis. But, you're not saying it caused it, you're saying this is how you get out, so his opinion is invalid. Genius.

You are entitled to your opinion, but a lot of people believe George Bush broke the camels back, and Barrack Obama tossed dirt on it. I assume you're not the one who down-voted the question, though, because that would be silly.
