They're all taken from Reddit's Today I Learned area.

Yes. Firstly, Hyperion is in North Carolina, but yes, it exact location is unknown.
Secondly, it is not the largest tree. It is not even the largest redwood. That would be the Lost Monarch, also in North Carolina.
The Prince one is also true apparently. It's not on youtube; its on Dailymotion though.

From the Hyperion wikipedia page:

"Hyperion is the name of a coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) in Northern California"

"The tree was verified as standing 115.55 metres (379.1 ft) tall by Stephen Sillett. The tree was found in a remote area of Redwood National and State Parks purchased in 1978."

What you don't understand is that the terrain in the redwood forests is not level, at all. Steve Sillett (who is a professor at Humboldt State and teaches a forestry/tree-climbing class there, and who has had sex in a hammock at the top of a redwood, and is generally badass) had to use several complex measuring devices developed by friends to accurately measure the tops the tallest trees, because it's near impossible to tell from the ground.

Sure, it's possible to notice that one or two trees seems to be pretty tall and large, but it's not something super obvious that you can just eyeball. Also, redwood forests are huge and oftentimes Sillett had to walk through areas with no trail for hours before he came across the tallest trees.

I go to UC Santa Cruz, which is in the middle of a redwood forest, and I'd be hard-pressed to pick out the largest tree. I walk over a bridge every day that, though it's at the same level as the middles or tops of the trees, doesn't seem as high because the terrain is so hilly.

tl;dr Read "The Wild Trees" by Richard Preston, it has the entire story of Sillett and Hyperion.

If your comment was too long for some people to read, then why would you suggest having them read a book instead?

Prince is a remarkable musician, he wrote many popular songs for other artists. I would'nt listen to him but he is an outstanding song writer and perfromer. Look into it, his persona is manufactured too he is a painfuly shy person in real lfe.

And so it was that they began their journey, debating on where to begin looking for such a tree. They decided to make their first stop in Africa, figuring that no one could afford an axe to cut down such a mighty tree. They journeyed far and wide, stole many goodies from random African huts, riding elephants when they tired of walking. But alas, their search ended without finding the great tree. They then went to...

someone else go now
