You probably don't care but the two Taliban had a few British soldiers pinned down with an LMG. I only know this because it was on the History/Discovery channel/

But the bullet already travels faster than the speed of sound. Regardless of the distance, the terrorist would have been hit before hearing the gun.
User avatar #610 to #45 - rockamekishiko (09/19/2012) [-]
i thought the bullet slowed down and the sound catch up and passed the bullet at that distance but then again that is pretty far away so the sound would have died by then. someone correct me please i'd like to know

#579 to #472 - thedudest (09/19/2012) [-]
I think I watched the same thing.....he hit the ground with the first shot and followed the trail left by the bullet through the air to aim for the second shot or something like that??
#50 to #45 - TheBikingFrog (09/18/2012) [-]
They mean the bystanders or the other terrorists around the two that got sniped wouldnt have heard the shots.
User avatar #59 to #50 - profarnsworth (09/19/2012) [-]
I think they meant that the sound wouldn't have even reached them. As in, no one would have heard the shots because the sound dampened to such a degree that they wouldn't have heard a bang. Basically no need for a silencer, at least thats what i got from it.
#198 - piercehawthorne (09/19/2012) [-]

That shot was taken in 2009, with an AWSM chambered in .338 Lapua. It was actually 2 kills on a pair of machine gunners that were pinning down friendly units. Even at 25x magnification the targets were difficult to even detect. An astonishing shot by anyone's standards.
User avatar #246 to #241 - readymadejunk (09/19/2012) [-]

User avatar #288 to #246 - vladhellsing ONLINE (09/19/2012) [-]
Nope, I've known about this ever since it appeared on the Wikipedia newsfeed 3 years back. I remember the details quite clearly.

As an extra bit of recalled trivia, the previous record was held by a Canadian sniper who took a target out at about 2.2km (approximately) with a MacMillan Tac 50 (bolt-action .50BMG rifle).

'Otaku' is a Japanese word roughly equivalating to 'nerd'. Id est; someone who has a thorough understanding of and interest in a certain topic (like an anime otaku).

What branch are you with, may I ask?

Could've guessed. Marine Recon, by any chance? I know it's a tough battle just to pass selection for Recon, but either way ******* respect. Few people are aware of how hard it is to even join an SF unit.
User avatar #706 to #705 - readymadejunk (09/21/2012) [-]
nah haha, Im an aircrew chief. I basically fly in the back of a ch-56 on a mounted LMG. Im waiting for MARSOC (Marine Special Ops) to come around for selection and thats where ill be going next hopefully. Its basically a step underneath Recon
User avatar #707 to #706 - vladhellsing ONLINE (09/21/2012) [-]
Well if you are hoping to make it into Recon someday let me just say - not from experience but from what I've read and seen:

User avatar #708 to #707 - readymadejunk (09/21/2012) [-]

Sniper Thread! I'll start and add some more! Simo Häyhä, is a Finnish sniper. He has the highest recorded number of confirmed sniper kills – 505 – in any major war.
#179 to #178 - rikerwithit (09/19/2012) [-]
Meet Navy SEAL Chris Kyle... the deadliest sniper in US history. He has 255 confirmed kills and his Longest shot was a 2,100-yard strike against a man armed with a rocket launcher.

#182 to #179 - rikerwithit (09/19/2012) [-]
Vasily Zaytsev! He was a Russian sniper during World War 2 andvmade an estimated 400 kills.

93 confirmed kills in Vietnam war where you needed an officer for confirmation.

why? all he did was kill people :(
User avatar #225 to #179 - kikkelikeiju (09/19/2012) [-]
He´s got nothing on Häyhä. Häyhä didn´t even use any optics, just the iron sights of his rifle. That Kyle fella has a scope in his rifle. You do the math.
#230 to #225 - rikerwithit (09/19/2012) [-]
Well for one, I posted different snipers, not to try to top the ones I already posted. But note, Chris Kyle would kick your ass any day.
User avatar #233 to #230 - kikkelikeiju (09/19/2012) [-]
I know you didn´t try to top the ones already posted. I only expressed my opinion about Häyhä being the best sniper of all time. No reason to be butthurt.
And of course Kyle would kick my ass, he´s a ******* Navy SEAL. But what does that have to do with anything? Charlie Bronson would smash you to bits anyday, but you don´t see me going around telling that.
#236 to #233 - rikerwithit (09/19/2012) [-]
Sounded like you were disrespecting an amazing sniper to me. I assumed, though... Kyle is still one of the best snipers in the world. Simo, obviously has the advantage on his confirmed kills. But! We're comparing two snipers from completely different generations and time frames.
User avatar #242 to #236 - kikkelikeiju (09/19/2012) [-]
Yeah well Häyhä didn´t have any modern technology. He had an old rifle, no scopes, no protective vests, no technology what so ever. He just ghosted (yeah it´s a verb) his way through the woods alone, killing russians like ants. He got his kills in less than 100 days, so about 5 kills per day. Regiments were sent after him and fire missions were conducted to kill just this one man, but he never died. Finally he was shot through the face, but he still didn´t die.
So no matter what, I respect Häyhä way more than Kyle.
But hey, whatever floats your boat. Anyone can think whatever they like.
#245 to #242 - rikerwithit (09/19/2012) [-]
He had the modern tech of the day though, and was in much larger style of warfare, I mean his tactics were amazing. He would shove snow in his mouth so the heat from his breath wouldn't show. The reason he didn't use a scope is because he liked to keep his head down. Vasily Zaytsev on the other hand he used a scope, but he was also in a large demolished city, perfect for hiding. We should be comparing them to be completely honest, both were from the same time frame and war.
User avatar #250 to #245 - kikkelikeiju (09/19/2012) [-]
Both were good, but I´m gonna go with Häyhä. He had more kills than Zaytsev and not using scopes makes him amazing in my eyes. Both had great tactics, but I still think Häyhä owns every other sniper in any other timeframe.
User avatar #541 to #179 - awesomanium (09/19/2012) [-]
Well, those 255 confirmed kills are pretty impressive.
But they've got nothing on my 300 confirmed kills.
I'm the top sniper in the entire US armed forces.
You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the **** out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my ******* words. You think you can get away with saying that **** to me over the Internet? Think again, ****** . As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You’re ******* dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little **** . If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your ******* tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will **** fury all over you and you will drown in it. You’re ******* dead, kiddo.
