This is still from a movie about Jehovah's Witnesses. Which still is quite ironic, since the people in the photo are playing Jehovah's Witnesses.

separation of church and state, anyone?

I'm not religious and consider myself an agnostic, because i simply don't care..

the biggest problem i have with religion though.. it's not open for debate..
every question i have is answered with utter nonsense or "just because"

just a heads-up, if you don't care for religion you're an apatheist. I'm one.

I love CONVERSATIONS about religion, mostly about Greek and Norse mythology.
But I'm tired of having to explain my beliefs to people who think that my beliefs are wrong anyway, or having arguments. ****, I hate religion arguments...

how is a conversation any different than a proper argument?
both sides present cases, the one doesn't necessarily have to convince the other, but they both think and learn?

I see conversations as sharing knowledge or experience and arguments as an attempt to persuade someone of something. this is also the definition of an argument

ar·gu·ment (ärgy-mnt)
n.
1.
a. A discussion in which disagreement is expressed; a debate.
b. A quarrel; a dispute.
c. Archaic A reason or matter for dispute or contention: "sheath'd their swords for lack of argument" (Shakespeare).

"How is a conversation any different than a proper argument?"

Conversation
noun
(a) talk between two or more people in which thoughts, feelings and ideas are expressed, questions are asked and answered, or news and information are exchanged

Argument
noun
(a) disagreement, or the process of disagreeing

Every argument is a conversation, but not every conversation is an argument. So yes, there's a big difference.

i'd say no 2 thoughts are alike, so disagreement is always shared..

"you are correct, good sir."

not much of a conversation.. is it?

I'm in your boat, with science you do have to make some base assumptions, just as religious people make the assumption that there's a God/gods/Spaghetti Monster.

That's just an opinion (one that I respect, however one I also happen to disagree with it). Many people, including I, are fairly against that notion. I believe it's better to be ignorant of the unknown than to accept some evidence-lacking idea (again, what is considerable evidence depends on the person. I personally see no credible evidence supporting religious ideals).

This might not apply to you, but it does for many of the faithful... You can't just go with an idea just because there is no substantial alternate. How did the universe come to be? Science has some hypotheses, but in the stage they're in as of now, we can't accept them yet as credible models. There are indicators, there's some evidence, but nothing that yields merit beyond a reasonable doubt, even less by scientific standards.

Is the belief of creation by a supernatural entity any better? Not at all, in my eyes. But the difference with religion is in its nature of practice. If you're going to sincerely follow your faith, you're kind of entitled to believe the dogma that accompanies your belief system. So unlike a scientist, the religious *will* hold to their substance regardless.

Well some people don't even use faith as something to explain the universe.

Some people use it simply as a guideline to live a better life or as a way to get through something traumatic or stressful, like a coping mechanism.

More like a philosophy then, isn't it? That's in my opinion the best kind of religion, the one used to improve your daily life, and not to explain the world.

Logic => Facts => Believe in them or not, still true.

Example: Holocaust => Does not fit the beliefs/socio-political of the leaders of Iran and Iran => They deny it

Proof: 1)Pictures of the holocaust, military reports, and survivor accounts
2) The leaders of those countries have stated their beliefs publicly

Don't say none, as Sumerians, Egyptians and Nubians were civilized, mainly the first 2, and invented many things which we use. The Sumerians invented writing on parchment and having standardised symbols for letters and numbers for example.

Scientists didn't have accurate enough tools, and therefore had to ''guesstimate'' based on no previous data, since the concept of pursing the atomic model was new (the science was new) at the time.

I love how people praise science and stuff, while having no IDEA how it's done...

You make a guess - a guess as in something that isn't proven yet (hypothesis), now if you can't prove it with experiments (or observations) - that's it it stays a theory - a guess on what MIGHT be true. For example we can have theories about the size and shape of the universe, but really without some way into the future equipment or means of travel to reach the edges it's still just theories (which is something some people believe in)

Logic does not prove the absence of God (not referring to a particular faith but God in general).
What was posted isn't logic vs. faith, its "i hate this religion" and that's what itsmy is addressing.
