ITT: Idiots correcting bigger idiots.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that you also do not have a full time job, because if you did you would actually understand how the tax bracket works. If someone makes $15,000/year, they don't pay 15% or $2250. They pay %10 on the first $8,700 ($870) and 15% on everything they make above that up to $35,350. So a person who made $15,000 would pay (in federal income tax alone) (.10 * 8700)+(.15 * (15000-8700)) = $1815. BUTWAITTHERESMORE.jpg - Unless you choose to itemize your deductions (extremely unlikely for this tax bracket) the standard deduction is $5,950 for a single person with no dependents. This brings your taxable income down to $9050, and based on the rules mentioned above, this means you pay a total of $922.50 in federal income tax.

Moving on, depending on the state in which this person lived, they may have paid 6 or 7% income tax. They would also have to pay social security and medicare tax which is an additional 5.65%.

This doesn't disagree with the overall tone of your post, but I would ask that next time before you try to 'explain' something that you have no first hand knowledge of, at least do some research first.

i work minimum wage, every week i calculate how much money i loose to taxes, i allow the goverment to take the standard amounts, my moms an accountant so i figure ill just have her help me at the end of the year when i do taxes, i dont claim myself on my own taxes so 100% of what i owe is take....and after all that all i loose is 18%, idk where the rest of you live but i live in Maryland which happens to be Democratic state, which means taxes tend to be high (now i dont know this for fact because ive never moved out of state so i dont worry about other states as of right now in my life) so idk what you are smoking but 18% is not anywhere close to 50%. also the people at my work that do claim themselves only pay about 10%.
User avatar #192 to #144 - I Am Monkey (09/16/2012) [-]
tl;rd: It's a baldfaced lie that he'd be making "less than $15,000" and paying $7500 in taxes.
User avatar #159 to #144 - I Am Monkey (09/16/2012) [-]
I had to totally simplify the numbers because people on this site have the attention span of a goldfish. As a student working his way through college, his deductions basically counter any money he'd be paying in taxes. You get a refund on 100% of your first $1000 and 50% of the next $1000. When he writes off his tuition and school related items he would effectively be paying no taxes.
User avatar #434 to #159 - kallebanan (09/16/2012) [-]
If we have the attention span of goldfish, i suggest that you leave us creatures of lower intelligence be and find a crowd more suited to your high intellectual standards. It offends me that you make the assumption that people cant understand simple taxation math. You believe that you are enlightened, but nay, you are quite the opposite. I do hope the you step down from your self implied pedestal of political understanding some day. TLDR; you are as bad as the first guy.
User avatar #222 to #159 - BobbyMcFerrin (09/16/2012) [-]
Not if he is claimed as a dependent by his parents. Also, he said he was making 'less than $15,000' so we can't really argue over what percentage he claimed to have paid.

What would have been a far more convincing argument on his part would be to reference capital gains tax. I know of an elderly widow who collects almost $100,000/year in dividends from stocks purchased by her father and husband. Because these dividends are considered eligible under the Tax Increase Prevention and Reconciliation Act, this woman pays a whopping 0% on her earnings. Here is a woman who has not worked a day in her life, and she is able to live on dividends without paying a cent to the government.

I am a college student, claimed as a dependent by my parents, and I work a full time job (45 hrs/week) during the summer and winter. I have no problem paying my fair share of taxes, and I don't believe that my rate is too high. I do however feel quite cheated when certain people can be rich as hell and still leech off the system while folks like me bust their collective asses and pay fair taxes.

Certainly the rich aren't the only ones ripping off the rest of America (i.e. those who misuse welfare), but it is worth noting that there are changes to be made at every level. I wouldn't go as far as to say that Mr. Romney "cheated" the rest of America, since he did not attempt to evade any taxes illegally. However, the fact of the matter is that under the system, folks like Romney were able to get away with paying 10-15% on their massive incomes. Moving money to offshore bank accounts certainly doesn't do the American people any good either. So while Mr. Romney did not do anything illegal, he is just one of the people out there who have more money than they know what to do with, and still utilize loopholes and special rules in the tax code to pay less than they should. I cannot support someone with such little regard for the typical taxpayer, or such little confidence in America.

Just rolling luck, On the serious not tho.

There is no perfect form of ruling. Democracy sucks ass cause u have to go with the General opinion. If the general opinion decides to suck cock, then so do you my fellow democrat. With marxism, blabbering idiots claim right of your posessions which you gained with hard work. Also the economy would be worse if it was controlled by the marxist government.
And on the note of "a ****** 8$ an hour job", people have had it way worse than that idiot, and he obviously doesn't understand the fact that the world doesn't orbit around him. Some people in my homeland, Estonia, make a ****** 300$ per month with a FULL time job(not talking about janitor, but about decent jobs). Or he could have it even worse and be starving in Souther-Africa, around Ethiopia or so.

communism/marxism can't work! why would anyone choose to go to school and end up with the same salary as a trashcarier? he would get less money in the years he wents to school (pluss the money for the school if it wasn't free) and he would get a harder job (pluss the education is hard). I agree to that there should be more equally salaries, but the guys with a hard education and a hard job should earn more then in the "easy" jobs where you don't need any education etc.
User avatar #1523 to #1045 - toplica (09/17/2012) [-]
I didn't say an ideal communist society would work, I'm just saying it is absolutely possible if the people wanted it bad enough, but they don't so it won't happen. Also in places like poland you couldn't choose your profession.

As Someone who Grew up in a "Communist" Country.

I'm going to just tell all you FJ Bros First hand, that Communism is not a good thing, at least in Yugoslavia's case (The closest thing to Pure Communism, besides statelessness)

The Government produces pretty much everything that you buy, not so bad, right?

Wrong ************* . Anything that doesn't get produced by the government is over priced to **** , so the government can make up for the loss in sales tax.

TL;DR Paying The Equivalent of 900 Dollars for a pair of ****** non-government made pants isn't fun, nor a part of an ideal society.

I agree with this particular OP as well.

The United States doesn't need Reform/Revolution.
That's all stupid overt liberal talk, the United States needs citizens who actually give a **** about congressional Vote.

When will Americans learn that their government runs based on its people's consent?

The President and presidential candidates can't do **** because they get rock-blocked by congress, bros. Try voting for congress once in a while, instead of keeping these career statesmen who care about prestige more than America.

If you guys want my Opinion, I dislike Obama because he Apologized for America having American Values. (What the **** , guy?)

But at the same time, I dislike Mitt Romney, because frankly he can't even Foreign Policy at all.

User avatar #1181 to #1174 - alfjnn (09/17/2012) [-]
That's where you're wrong.
The government isn't the problem, in the united states, it's the lobbyists and the missions of said lobbyists.
Honestly, the Government is as legit as you or I, but the corperations of power, that's the main issue.

But all that can be stopped if we started voting in Good American Non Corperate Lap Dog Politicians, instead of all these guys who bend over for a wad of cash.

The governments countless miles of red tape on businesses making the barrier of entry into certain industries nearly possible to overcome is, indeed, a problem. We need a freer market, imo.
User avatar #1196 to #1190 - alfjnn (09/17/2012) [-]
Our Market cannot be any freer.
I can buy a Euro Stock, and a Russian Stock, all with the same Broking Firm.

Physically speaking, I can buy whatever the **** I want, if the price is right, even as a private citizen, depending on state laws.
User avatar #1281 to #1196 - thisusernameisalie (09/17/2012) [-]
Uniform is still drying:

There's two sides of any given market: Consumption and Production. While we can definitively say that consumption is relatively unfettered, (barring complete bans on certain goods such as, marijuana, lawn darts, raw milk, etc etc), we cannot say that the production side is free.

There are regulations beyond regulations, and taxes on taxes, and fines and fees upon fines and fees if you are looking to start your own business: the freedom of a certain market can be looked at by it's barriers of entry: the lower the barriers, the freer that market, these things raise said barriers of entry. There are many other things that help destroy businesses, but this is just one example. Another great example of this is our progressive tax rates.

I understand that Cronyism on Capital Hill are partially to blame; but so are people who think they are doing these things, "for the common good," or for, "income equality."

(Crony Capitalists do share a lot of the blame, though).

User avatar #1293 to #1281 - alfjnn (09/17/2012) [-]
Uhh.
No **** .
Production isn't free. Nor is Consumption.
Production Requires Capital.
Consumption gives utility.
Essentialy Production Sells utilty, and gains back the price of capital in double, making profit.

That has nothing to do with the free Market.
