He's a silent hero. A watchful protector.
A dark knight

But will Jupiter die a hero or live long enough to see itself become the villain??

Asteroid was heading towards Earth, Jupiter caught it with its massive gravitational pull, made the asteroid crash into it. Took a bullet for us, basically.

i thought this happened quite often
User avatar #404 to #402 - mazzyrazzy (09/15/2012) [-]
As I stated in a post below, it does. The difference is that no scientist was aware of this one: it could have hit us with so little warning. The only reason we know about it is because some amateur astronomers in the United States saw the asteroid hit Jupiter through their telescope.
User avatar #406 to #404 - haveagoodone (09/15/2012) [-]
yeah i just read that comment
was it actually on course for earth? because that's extremely hard to tell with all the different gravitational pulls
and even if it was what does it matter? gravity is fixed, it's not like it was gna hit us and then jupiter just decided to give the asteriod a hug.
unless is was very close to earth... was it?
User avatar #411 to #406 - mazzyrazzy (09/15/2012) [-]
No, we were never in any real danger. The point of this though is if Jupiter wasn't there (say, it didn't exist or was in another stage of it's orbit around the sun_), the asteroid's trajectory would have been frighteningly close to Earth. Would it of hit? I don't know.
User avatar #414 to #411 - haveagoodone (09/15/2012) [-]
we would have been hit like a whore without jupiter all throughout time

User avatar #223 to #221 - mazzyrazzy (09/15/2012) [-]
I never said it never happened. The reason this got so much publicity was that no scientist actually saw it coming, and the only reason we saw it in the first place was because of a few amateur astronomers.

Well, Jupiter could as well send asteroids into a direct collision course with earth, in fact, it has done that several times. This time we were lucky though

What if Jupiter is actually pulling the meteorites/asteroids towards itself intentionally, so it could combine and create a super asteroid which would then **** everyone up.

it pulled in an asteroid that was headed for earth with its gravitational pull and made it crash into itself instead of hitting us.
User avatar #132 to #130 - killertpu (09/15/2012) [-]
apparently some huge ass asteroid was ready to hit earth, but it got pulled in by Jupiter gravity field and crashed
#161 to #132 - harleyzone (09/15/2012) [-]
but wouldn't that happen anyways? we have a lot of near misses with meteors, but they are always pulled by some other mass' gravity before it hits us, some planet or bigger meteor, or something usually changes it's course, after all, it's nearly impossible to draw a straight line from point A to B in space, especially when you think about how everything is in constant motion or orbit. it's part of why lightspeed space travel would be useless, you would need to navigate through so many obstacles in space, it just wouldn't be practical.
