I use Squares and Rectangles as a simile very often.

It's a good philosophy.

But good philosophies aren't all Squares and Rectangles.

You know...looking at that picture...I think the arrows are backwards.

I mean, when I look at it, the message I get is that a square is not a rectangle, but a rectangle is a square.

I could be reading that wrong, for I am a silly man, but...well, that's what I get from it.

ANIME IS JUST A JAPANESE ABBREVIATION OF 'ANIMATION'

MANGA ARE SIMPLY COMICS CREATED IN THE RIGHT-to-LEFT STYLE COMMON TO JAPAN

Why do some people call 'Avatar TLA' an 'American Anime'? Because they combine some tropes from Western Cartoons with tropes from Eastern ones.

The more you know, ************* .

Yes it is American written and directed but they borrowed the general japanese animation style. It's not a bad thing it's just that's how they did it. I still love the show.

Here are points I would like to make:
1. Any dictionary/source you go to will refer to Anime as a "Japanese Style of Animation", and will not be referred to as a cartoon.

2. Yes, it is technically the Japanese word for cartoon. However, it often happens that between languages, the same word means something different. An example would be the word "video" (Latin: I see, English: moving visual images). So no, Anime is not the same as saying cartoon. What we call "anime", the Japanese refer to as "Japanese Anime". What we call cartoon, the Japanese refer to as "American/Western Anime". That's just how it is.

3. The reason we find it insulting is the cultural relationship and ideas of cartoons. They are usually humorous, and silly. This is insulting to anime fans, because Anime tends to have very mature themes and realism.

Anime are exactly like serious series, except they're animated instead of having a cast of real actors. Cartoons are made for humor and enjoyment.
User avatar #226 to #205 - IamSofaKingdom (09/09/2012) [-]
I'd say there is just as much silly anime as serious and maybe twice as much hentai/fan service style. Honestly I think there is no problem interchanging the notions but if people want to get riled up over it being a foreign language word to describe a similar idea in a different culture, whatever, go for it.
#217 to #205 - bronybox (09/09/2012) [-]
Now granted, there are humorous anime. But even most of those have mature themes.

Take Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-Chan for example. It's a humorous anime for kids. Dokuro does the following in every episode:
1. Calls the main character a pedophile (Because in the future, he creates an immortality recipe that stops women from aging past 12 yo)
2. Bludgeons the main character to death with a giant spiked club
3. Is either naked or acts extremely lusty towards the main character (These situations tend to end the same way as #2. Bludgeoning.

Isn't anime Japanese cartoons?
User avatar #414 to #400 - paquack (09/09/2012) [-]
Yeah, and styles obviously vary, just like cartoons. Actually, one of the first things I ran into when I started art school was that I was discouraged from imitating the anime style in my own work. They say it's because anime lures artists away from being anatomically correct with their characters, but cartoons are just as guilty, so it could've been some Eastern hatred that was going on at the time. As long as the artist practices anatomy and life drawing on a regular basis, it shouldn't matter what style they decide to end up with.

Sorry for the long post, it was probably more than what you were expecting, but your question gave me the opportunity to give my little rant on how anime and cartoons are basically the same thing. Here's a thumb for you in return.

TL;DR Like whatever you want to like.

I always think of the difference being that and anime follows a story line (perhaps with some filler episodes)
and that cartoons have spontaneous episodes with their own story line ( some exceptions can be made such as "to be continued" episodes)

(I thought that was a more technical definition but i guess it's just my opinion)
