User avatar #76 to #75 - cinematicbrix (09/03/2012) [-]
Well, since Finnish is my other Native Language, I don't think it sounds any more angrier than the English version.

I would like to think of it as a reference to former brittish colonies that still speak English, and not as an affront to my country.
#22 to #19 - anon (09/03/2012) [-]
Or it's just insulting northern Ireland.

#83 to #81 - anon (09/03/2012) [-]
in these stupid things people only put britains flag for it because it's not stupid. They put the American flag but the Brittish one is oddly absent when English is the ****** up word.

Actually there was one a while back where it had the Union Jack with us calling cigarettes fags. As the only notable word in this comp is 'fag' though, I doubt either of us would have much luck singling it out in this website.

Well, Finnish is a whole other language group than any of those. All of those languages are Germanic (Except for French which is Romance.) and Finnish is a Uralic language, so I wouldn't really expect it to sound anything like any West-European languages.
User avatar #164 to #126 - teoferrazzi (09/03/2012) [-]
a plausible interpretation, but a wrong one! the word sukla is a transposition from ' You need to login to view this link is contrived to sound as close as possible to the original. it has no uralic origins, since obviously when cocoa was discovered, the word came from the people who discovered america - that is spaniards. therefore, the word may LOOK remarkably different, but it SOUNDS very similar to all the others.
#174 to #164 - spidahridah (09/03/2012) [-]
You've made your point, and you're right. Now that you mention it, I can see how "sukla" sounds like "sjokolade." Thanks for clearing that up, good sir.
User avatar #181 to #174 - teoferrazzi (09/03/2012) [-]
sorry - didn't notice it was you in both comments.
User avatar #168 to #164 - teoferrazzi (09/03/2012) [-]
to clarify, it probably derives from french - that's where chocolat comes from. related: the vietnamese word for it is 'sôcôla'
#192 to #126 - anon (09/03/2012) [-]
but chocolate is not a west european word, not even indo european, its nahuatl , your logic is very flawful
also, suklaa is very close to the pronunciation of chocolat because it happen to come from the same word
#135 to #126 - lordmacflurri (09/03/2012) [-]
sokoláta - greek
sjokolade -Norwegian
shokolad - russian
User avatar #142 to #135 - spidahridah (09/03/2012) [-]
Both Greek and Russian are heavily influenced by Latin, just like most of Europe. Finland and the Baltic countries have always been significantly isolated when it comes to languages.

you are a very wize man. Please, accept my thumbs for educating me

I appreciate it.
User avatar #172 to #142 - teoferrazzi (09/03/2012) [-]
all the words that sound like 'chocolate' are not derived from latin or greek, since there is no such word in either language. it derives from spanish.

Yeah, this was the flag in like the 1900's before Northern Ireland joined Great Britain.
#74 to #71 - anon (09/03/2012) [-]
It isn't even the union jack, it's the union flag. It's only the union jack when flown at sea.
