NASA is located on Merritt Island, as you can tell.

As an aerospace engineer I can tell you that the Shuttles, whilst being amazing for their time are now old as hell and we can now do much better than what is essentially attaching a robust tin-can to a bomb.

Just so you know NASA is in Titusvile, Florida and the launch pad is in Cape Canaveral. Tho Merritt Island has a bad ass mall
User avatar #52 to #51 - hallaatit (09/01/2012) [-]
Merritt Island does not have a 'badass' mall. It's as small as **** . And **** is pretty small.

I live on the Space Coast in Satellite Beach, not to far from Cape Canaveral and Obama really screwed us over. I have lots of friends who had parents and family working for NASA who got laid off. Even my old scout master lost his job and could't help with trrop because he had no steady income. Personally I like Obama better than Romney, but he ****** a good portion of Florida with the cut of funds/ending of the Shuttle Program. Pic related.

From Titusville. My dad got laid off and is now in South Carolina. **** sux bro. I went to Obama's visit at BCC in like August of 2008 and he specifically promised us continued space programs ... Did not happen.

Every time it went off, I thought an earthquake was happening!

Anyone claiming Obama murdered the space program knows nothing about NASA and space technologies.
User avatar #71 to #10 - Mandible ONLINE (09/01/2012) [-]
Truth is, in accord with the directives President George W. Bush issued on January 14, 2004 the Space Shuttle program was cancelled after many, many, many extensions to the program. It simply took until 2011 for the scheduled final missions to be completed. Blaming President Obama for the Space Shuttle program ending is like blaming him for the shut down of the GM plant in Wisconsin.

All of NASA's achievements have been made with the budget of a little more than half a penny on the US taxdollar. And people still complain that we're spending too much up there.

I love my country, just not the people who run it.

Yes, because Obama has complete control over the entire U.S. economy and can conjure more money for the space program.
User avatar #31 to #24 - mylazy (09/01/2012) [-]
No, but he could stop wasting the money that he has control over.

He's spent less than even Clinton has, learn your facts. The first year of any incoming president term is saddled—for better or for worse—with the budget set by the president whom immediately precedes the new occupant of the White House. Not only was the 2009 budget the property of George W. Bush—and passed by the 2008 Congress—it was in effect four months before Barack Obama took the oath of office.

Accordingly, the first budget that can be blamed on our current president began in 2010 with the budgets running through and including including fiscal year 2013 standing as charges on the Obama account, even if a President Willard M. Romney takes over the office on January 20, 2013.

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-5744/national-debt-has-increased-more-under-obama-than-under-bush/

There ya go, thought this would help clear things up for you. By the way, you should actually read it. It talks about how Obama spent in one term what Bush spent in two.
User avatar #62 to #48 - SniperKitty (09/01/2012) [-]
I have to admit the far right has done an AMAZING job putting this all on Obama. The idea that his spending has increased might have something to do with the first year of the Obama presidency where the federal budget increased a whopping 17.9% —going from $2.98 trillion to $3.52 trillion. I’ll bet you think that this is the result of the Obama sponsored stimulus plan that is so frequently vilified by the conservatives…but you would be wrong. Like I said before, the first year of any incoming president term is set in stone, it has ALWAYS been this way.

Courtesy of Marketwatch-

In fiscal 2010 (the first Obama budget) spending fell 1.8% to $3.46 trillion.
In fiscal 2011, spending rose 4.3% to $3.60 trillion.
In fiscal 2012, spending is set to rise 0.7% to $3.63 trillion, according to the Congressional Budget Office’s estimate of the budget that was agreed to last August.
Finally in fiscal 2013 — the final budget of Obama’s term — spending is scheduled to fall 1.3% to $3.58 trillion. According to the CBO’s latest budget outlook.

I was under the impression the US has not passed a budget in years and each of Obama's have been unanimously voted down in the senate ( [url deleted] This being said, it is congress's responsibility to pass a budget, not the sitting president. So the budget that Obama was presented with was agreed upon by the democratic controlled congress under president Bush.
Also in terms of your spending argument, the analysis is difficult to do because of how money is split in the first year. Nutting, the creator of the viral facebook post your are referring to, did not include tarp, CHIP expansions, or 140 billion from the bailout, which is not necessarily wrong but it is questionable. Also, the big knock isn't federal spending, it's the rising debt which is more a reflection of the overall economy. Federal spending seems larger because it's ratio to GDP is larger due to an increase in federal assistance programs.
Tl:dr it's simply more complicated than federal spending. I'd rather see a transition from NASA to privately operated space travel, but then again, I believe in more people than government.

How much you spend, and whether you waste what you spend are too completely different things.
User avatar #63 to #46 - SniperKitty (09/01/2012) [-]
Sorry healthcare seems to be a 'waste' to you but I would like to be on par with every other 1st world country wouldn't you? All presidents "waste" money on **** we don't like, we can't control that, the fact that he's spent LESS than previous presidents should make you happy, that means even if he spends it on **** you don't like, he isn't spending near as much as other presidents would have on things you don't like....
User avatar #74 to #63 - mylazy (09/01/2012) [-]
it isn't so much that healthcare is a waste, but more that it is a violation of our rights. You see, we have the right to choose, given to us by the constitutions 9th amendment which protects our right not expressed other places in the bible. Just like we have the right to choose a Microsoft product over an Apple product or the right not to buy a product at all, we also have the right to choose to buy healthcare or not. The government seems to disagree. As it is, the government likely won't even be able to afford medicaid. You know the free health/' reduced price health care to older people, disabled people, etc. Do you know why? Ever heard of the baby boom? Yes, well the population at the time of the baby boom increased immensely, and now the people born in that time are, very soon going to older. This is projected to more than double the price of medicaid alone. Now with the added cost of healthcare, which Obama incorrectly thinks will lower the prices of healthcare, our spending will rise whether Obama stays president or not. What's more, in 10 years there is projected be a severe lack of people in the medical profession. This means that prices would increase anyway. You know that some countries with free health care find that the waiting period for their appointments are very lengthy.

Just so you aren't accusing me of false information, the lack of doctors was predicted by the Health Resources and Services my black sonistration (HRSA) and the double in cost due to more older people using medicaid comes from the Congressional Budget Office.

Anyone who complains about NASA's budget with a phrase anything like the following...
"That rover cost x dollars! We should keep the money down here and not spend it up there." Needs to be raped anally with a shuttle.

User avatar #15 to #8 - hallaatit (09/01/2012) [-]
Well, technically, it's always updated on the inside. The outside of the spaceship looks the same because, hey, what works great, doesn't need to be fixed!

the interior isnt the issue, it is the structure of the things, inho i think we needed a replacement.

Obama cares more about the space program than his competitors, thing is he pulled the plug on the shuttles so as to divert more funds to the development of a better alternative.
User avatar #21 to #13 - thisjerk (09/01/2012) [-]
He cut NASA funding in half. Actually under every democratic president since NASA, they have always been cheap on the NASA funding, republicans, despite what people think, have had higher NASA funding, by a large margin. I don't know about Romney, but I wouldn't be surprised if he raised NASA funding.

The thing about it is, as much as NASA is great, we really don't have the money for it.
#42 to #32 - jakeattack (09/01/2012) [-]
yeah we do lets just spend a few billion less on the military we can still have a powerful military without using 711 billion a year
User avatar #73 to #42 - Endofzeeworld (09/01/2012) [-]
Oh I agree. Military spending is way too ******* high. But its also a nesiccary expense. Its not nessicary for them to be spending so goddamned much, but at the moment, if we were to cut spending to the military, it would go to like, fixing the defecit or infrastructure building, not to NASA. NASA is a non-nessicary expense. I also can't spell the word nessicary.

nothing great is going to happen if someone else is elected, if they are brilliant then they would be assassinated. The next president will say something to win the hearts of the public and he wont deliver then four years later merica is at square one.

I love how so many people think of the President (any one) as some sort of all-controlling king that has the power to do whatever they want. Obama didn't ruin the economy, Bush didn't start a war, and Abraham Lincoln didn't single-handedly free the slaves. That's why we have a system of checks and balances. I blame the whole government for our current problems here in the US of A, not just the President.
