A Nebraska family is fighting tor
their deaf son' s rig ht to continue
using his own name after school
officials told them it was
inappropriate and must be
changed.
Th ) Hunter ******* Th resews Hunter Spa nger has been told
USES a type assign language his signed name looks too much like a gun by
Signing Exact English (Set) to school " ciaos. (. earn)
communicate and signs his name
by crossing his [nalex finger and mkettle finger and then wagging his
hands.
Drawing upon a policy that forbids "any instrument that looks like a
weapon," Grand Island Public School board officials say that Hunter' s
name looks too much like a gun gesture to be used in school.
It' s a symbol. It' s an actual sign, a registered sign, through Set," said
******** s father, Brian, to KOLN in Grand Island, Nebraska "HE' S deaf,
and his name sign, they say, is a violation of their weapons policy"

Oh no guns are too scary for our kids! ban anything that looks like them scary scary scary!
With that said, why don't they just ban nightmares and spiders while they're at it.

...in a country that has almost no gun control whatsoever...

Their really trying to work towards gun control though. Atleast 4 of my family's guns are illegal in essentially every east coast state.

couldn't he just learn another form of sign language--or hell, write out his name on paper/a whiteboard?

people are so busy protecting other people's rights that they don't realize how many other ways there are to approach things
#347 to #333 - anonymous (08/30/2012) [-]
They wanted him to spell it out with the sign letters. But he's 3. So he doesnt know all his letters....

There is normal ASL where articles are not used and S.E.E. sign language, which is a branch of American Sign Language, where articles are used. Normally you would sign your name using the alphabet but when you are part of the deaf community you are given a name sign by family or peers. To them this is their name. It represents some characteristic of the kid or some event that happened involving the kid. It's a little bit like if your name was John and you were not allowed to be called Johnny.
User avatar #335 to #333 - infiniteduress (08/30/2012) [-]
right so you would trade your name for a rule who's existence is based on fear-based media?
User avatar #337 to #335 - audioclave (08/30/2012) [-]
There is ASL (american sign language) and BSL (British sign language) and there's two different sign dialects already. It's not trading a name, it's trading dialects because it'll probably happen in more schools than one and so the kid isn't a special goddamn snowflake the parents can just get over themselves and teach the kid another dialect.
User avatar #345 to #337 - infiniteduress (08/30/2012) [-]
This is SEE a modification of ASL for children. anyway, that isn't the point, the hand gesture is his NAME it is how he is identified, it would take years for him, and those around him, to adapt and would possibly be tramatic
User avatar #344 to #337 - kikichu (08/30/2012) [-]
S.E.E is a form of ASL, which many use to help with English in the future. Actually I use S.E.E in my family, and Name signs are a part of any deaf language just as nicknames are in English, most people get at a young age. I have had mine for 15 years.
Its not like the kid did anything wrong because his namesign resembles what they think could be weapons related.

My old high school actually stopped singing our national anthem (Canadian anthem) every morning because it has the word 'God' in it. Our NATIONAL ******* ANTHEM!! Luckily that didn't last long, as every student and their parents were quick to point out how ******* ridiculous it was. Censorship is such **** . It only promotes ignorance, closed mindedness and a hatred of authority. What exactly are we being protected from?
