Can someone tell me where Slenderman came from? I'm probably going to get thumbed down but i've been wondering this since he's gained prominence.

The first time I saw him was in a youtube series called "Marble Hornets" or something like that, and I saw somewhere that was where he came from. The show is pretty great too, and scary.

I read some where they were having some "who could come up with a scary monster/person/thing/story" contest on halloween and thats where he came up from. I think he won seconds place.

Don't quote me on this.

My understanding was that he was part of a contest on SomethingAwful to create the best photoshopped monster. I know he was also the subject of a series of amateur horror videos uploaded to YouTube under the alias of the "Marble Hornets" project. I'm not terribly clear on the details, but a quick Google search should solve those problems for you if you don't mind reading. If you do mind reading, though, I'm not sure how you made it through this far.

He is also a direct derivation of a number of Germanic folk lore being and fairy tale creatures. Look into German mythology, in particular the Erl Koning, or Elf King. Bears a striking resemblance to Slendy.
