A few months ago, James Cameron (Director of Avatar, Titanic, etc.) also dove to the bottom of the Mariana Trench to get footage for Avatar 2. In fact, he went deeper than the dive in 1960, setting the record for the deepest manned dive in history.
Here's a link to one of the many articles you could find on the subject:

This post is relevant to my interests and has gained a thumb.

"You know why they put oxygen masks on planes? Oxygen gets you high. In a catastrophic emergency, you're taking giant panicked breaths. Suddenly you become euphoric, docile. You accept your fate. It's all right here. Emergency water landing - 600 miles an hour. Blank faces, calm as Hindu cows. "

No, when Comercial airplanes take out the masks, it means there is depressurisation in the cabin, which you would need oxygen. Second, the FAA states that the pilot must go to an altitude (i think its 20,000 feet or lower) where there is not so much pressure, and natural oxygen can fill the cabin. So you wont be wearing your mask for more than 5 minutes. Third, Masks dont come out when the airplane is in an emergency and its about to crash. That would be stupid.

Oh, and i noticed you put quotation marks on this, who said this?
#141 to #132 - zerodate (08/26/2012) [-]
Also the crash position is meant to instantly kill you, because airlines realized it was cheaper to pay for a funeral than hospital bills.

Yeah thats been proven to be completely wrong... and masks drop down in the event of depressurisation when you would need oxygen... the ignorance here is laughable
User avatar #159 to #156 - zerodate (08/26/2012) [-]
They masks pump out alot more oxygen then you would need to sustain life being the point.

that was busted on mythbusters.
#154 to #146 - zerodate (08/26/2012) [-]
I could see why you would think that but in mythbusters fashion they sort of half assed it, one they dropped the model cockpit straight down, two they did not get nearly enough speed from the fall to be even close to the speed of a plane "unless they managed to slow it down for something like a river landing".
#161 to #154 - EnergizierAnon (08/26/2012) [-]
they wouldn't have actually been able to crash a plane to test the myth. they did the best that they could. if they weren't in the crash position in their test, they probably would have been hurt to some degree, going off what happened to their crash dummies.
User avatar #164 to #161 - zerodate (08/26/2012) [-]
The point being that they aren't actually able to really test this.
