I got a C in my Computing GCSE.
I'm ashamed.
But I get this, so it's all good.
Yay, even failures can understand it! WOO!

for all that do not get it an if statement in programming sets a parameter for an action for instance If x=7 then an action will occur in the code, however if x does not = 7 a different action will occur. its a true or false statement that gives two outcomes depending on set parameters in your code.

Is it me? or is it that only some really understand the joke and the rest of the thumbs are from those who don't understand it but don't want to feel stupid (like when everyone laughs and you just laugh along)

Programmers pov:
function goToTheMarket() {
if (eggs.exist==True) Then {
Call BuyMilk(6);
}
Else {
Call BuyMilk(1);
}
}

computer code is often full of very rigid sets of conditional statements. It's very, very common to see the patter: "if (condition) then (doSomething) else (doSomethingElse)" in programming logic, and that's why this joke is funny to people who have written code (or understand it).

the joke is.. bring milk. nut if they have eggs bring 6. meaning. if they have eggs bring 6 milk bottles. as a programmer everything needs to be taken litteraly

"Bring one bottle of Milk. If they have eggs, bring six (eggs)"

The son misunderstood her, so he thought she meant it like that:

"Bring one bottle of milk. If they have eggs, bring six (bottles of milk)"

So he bought 6 bottles of milk because they had eggs.

But doesnt the period implies 2 different assignments
Bring 1 bottle of milk

If they have eggs bring 6

Get A
if B then bring 6B

The Specification was not 100% clear. It's not the programmer's fault.

The joke isn't that the guy is the programmer. The guy is the program and the mom is the programmer.

A common problem in programming is that computers take what you write very literal, which is what the guy in the story did.
