Wow... Thats ironic... I just Finished the whole season of the original Fullmetal Alchemist on netflix... One of my fav shows ever. It was awesome.

that and brotherhood took alot of my life lol
User avatar #135 to #64 - phantomrose (08/18/2012) [-]
I watched the original FMA a few years back, and it blew my mind. But I strongly recommend watching Brotherhood next. I watched Brotherhood and basically melted into a puddle of fangasmic glory...over and over and over.

Brotherhood's my all-time, hands-down, no contest favorite anime...I bought all 27 volumes of the manga for $300+ and regret nothing.

But I'll warn you first, the first 13 episodes of Brotherhood might seem a little boring since they cover material that was already in the original FMA.
User avatar #140 to #135 - XxRAVAGExX (08/19/2012) [-]
Alrigt man ill start watching that But i herd it didnt have as many sad moments and it wasnt as emotion as the original Fullmetal, Although it did have its moments, The original fma had the better emotional scenes and the music made it. But ah...Yeah. Ill start watching brotherhood. But i have a question, Whats brotherhood cover? Like whats it about? Is it about what happens in the orginial fma, like stuff we never got to see? or is it like a remake?
#141 to #140 - phantomrose (08/19/2012) [-]
Well personally I wouldn't say Brotherhood is less emotional. In fact, it has PLENTY more emotional moments in it that the original never got to include.

Here's the difference between the two. FMA came out in 2003 back when the manga was fairly new. They tried to keep pace with the manga as long as possible, using filler when it was necessary, but eventually they had to overtake it. The first 30 episodes of FMA essentially follow the manga plotline (with filler), but when the greed arc came around, they switched things up since the manga hadn't gotten that far. For the rest of FMA, the people working on the anime made up their own story and ending.

In 2008 Brotherhood came out, because the manga was nearing its close and they could make an anime that fully followed the manga's story. They did this with good reason, because the manga's story was nothing short of amazing. As much as I adored the original series, FMA Brotherhood wins hands-down, because it tops the charts in just...everything.

Personally, I wasn't hooked on Brotherhood immediately (I was with FMA) solely because the first episodes cover the same material as FMA, but they have a rush a decent amount of it. Once the story split, and they really got into the thick of the plot, I was drooling over every moment.

To name a few differences where Brotherhood has the upper hand:
1. Hohenheim. He gets MAJOR development, story, and importance in Brotherhood. His character gets so much more depth in the later chapters that it makes me feel a little bad to look back on how little development he got in FMA
2. The homunculi. They all took a level in badass.
3. The cast of characters. So many characters were never introduced in FMA
5. The plot. So much more interesting, so much more evil, so much more awesome.

But the first is better with:
1. Nina and Tucker. Because of filler it was much sadder

FMA had its shining moments, but every fan I've ever spoken to prefers Brotherhood

Oh ok. So what you're saying is, Fma was basically made up by the producers for lack of manga, So brotherhood came out. its a remake of FMA... But insted with the manga story?
User avatar #143 to #142 - phantomrose (08/19/2012) [-]
Yes! Precisely!
User avatar #145 to #143 - XxRAVAGExX (08/19/2012) [-]
Oh. I just finished the first ep... its weird... Its hard getting used to Al's Voice... And some other things are little weird... But it is pretty cool. And im gonna keep watching.
User avatar #146 to #145 - phantomrose (08/19/2012) [-]
Oh yeah, I almost forgot about Al's voice change. Unfortunately the Brotherhood actor isn't as good as the original, and Aaron (the original actor) was 17 by the time brotherhood came around...

The differences in animation seemed kind of strange to me at first, but you'll get used to them in time. And again, very little of the first episodes will wow you, since they've basically been covered.

In my experience:
1-13: Hmm, the differences seem strange, and I already know what's happened. But hey, it's FMA, so it's great anyway.
14: Wait, this is different from how it happened last time. This is...wow. Different.
15: New characters. New plot. Silly, but I like that I'm learning things never involved in the last series!
16-18: Holy... **** . How'd they--?! This didn't happen last time! This is crazy! and different! And I can't believe they'd so that...
20: Great episode for a lot of reasons. Hohenheim development (the beginning of a long, hard look the series takes at this man) and a rather chilling discovery.

I could go on like this for all the episodes, but that'd take far too long. For me, episode 19 was what solidly hooked me on Brotherhood, but 16 was when I really found my interests piqued again. From then on the series follows a long web that slowly puts every tiny piece of the show in its place. Brotherhood is definitely a lot more intricate, but it's beautifully thought out and every piece of it makes sense.

The one tiny little complaint I would have is with episode 30 (which covers flashbacks to the Ishvalan War) ONLY because the manga did it so much better (they shortened it). There are 27 manga volumes, and typically each volume has 2-3 episodes worth of material. Volume 15 (all of which was the Ishvalan War) was condensed into one episode (30). The manga went so much deeper into the horrors of war and the truly human side of something so inhumane. I recommend finding the manga chapters for that when you get there.

Alright alright. Im gonna keep going. its still strange though! because youre watching this while you just watched the original and youre just like... "wut". Because Its pretty different from what you saw in the original. But, it still is good. and i can see myself finishing it. But its sad that there is only 39 eps on Netflix... So im gonna have to watcht he rest online with Hulu and all those annoying ass ads and those surveys and **** -_-
