I don't see what's ironic about an old man dying, regardless of the circumstances. Irony would imply that you didn't see it coming. Now if it was like, 98 year old man finally gets his medical degree, dies the next day, that's irony, because it at least suggests he'd be in relatively good health.

The joke was the headline of the paper at the very top, it says "life has a way of sneaking up on you""when you think everything is going right."

No, the joke is that the whole newspaper (including the headline at the top) is from a song, a song about irony, with arguably the worst lineup of "ironic" situations ever created. The artist even said they were mostly bad examples of irony because that in itself was ironic, but most people agree that's ******** .
