I just find it hysterical that 'mericans are bragging over their freedom when they are one of the last nations in the western world that should do that.

Whoa, chill dude I'm a different person. But I live in Europe.
User avatar #703 to #689 - ishouldplayzelda (08/07/2012) [-]
i realize that.
i have a question. in your country, can you own a firearm? and what do you have to go through to get one?
User avatar #792 to #703 - Viggiator (08/07/2012) [-]
Yes you can, and you have to get a licence to carry it. I got to be honest I don't know exactly how to get it, because i currently don't own any firearms, but dude please don't pull that "American patriot": 'the right to have firearms equals freedom' becuase America could really benefit from not having so many guns everywhere. Where I live close to no one gets killed by guns, and no that doesn't triple the knife violence. I've been to several states in USA and I think it's a great place, great people, but I really disagree on the right to own guns.

Im not saying Americans aren't free, but I think many of your rights are more or less only on the paper. You have two President candidates, who both struggle for the neutral middle policies and are vote pleasers, you have major problems with freedom for homosexuals if you're poor you can't never really be free, and your liberal market which started out great just made a rich elite who has way too much power now. Don't be a nationalist, fight for the future and a better place to live, instead of comparing to anyone else.

you make some good points. i've always felt that the right to own guns is the right to personal safety, which i still do. when used properly, guns can be the most effective form of self-defense there is. everyone says that guns are for defending yourself from the government, which they can be but how many people would actually do that when the time comes? imo modern americans are kind of pussies when it comes to that. the colonists didn't have any problem killing their british brethren, who were under orders from the king to oppress them, but nowadays i doubt anyone would be willing to kill american soldiers, even for their freedom.
i've been thinking a lot about ditching america in a while. i still feel like it's moderately free right now but it's still going down the ******* . i've heard canada is pretty nice, you can still own a gun, their government isn't retarded. when america is completely in the toilet or getting very close to that, i'll probably move to canada

Yes, I do agree that a weapon can be very useful for protection and that I have no problem with, the problem is, when it is as easy to get a gun as it is in America, many people who probably shouldn't have one, can get one anyway. The shooting at the batman premire is an example of how bad it can be. I do agree that many American politicians can be a little... Stupid (to sugarcoat it). I don't know much about Canada but it's probably nice though, good luck with moving :)
User avatar #802 to #801 - ishouldplayzelda (08/07/2012) [-]
and many people who want one can get one anyway where you live. if a criminal wants a gun, they're going to find one no matter where they are. gun laws don't prevent criminals from obtaining guns because they're laws and criminals aren't exactly well known for obeying laws. personally,. i think the whole batman shooting would have been avoided or ended quickly if every competent person in that theater had been concealed or open carrying a handgun
>guy walks in and opens fire and hits a few people
>gun toting citizens shoot him down
>maybe 3 or 4 people are harmed or killed but that's a hell of a lot less than 12 deaths and 52 injured.
guns don't kill people, people kill other people with guns. sometimes they save a lot of lives, or would have if they'd been in the hands of the good guys.

and thank you. i hope it's nice and that it all works out

And as my country? Scotland. To own a gun? Gun license and history check. Why should we give guns to anyone?

what's your point? it's not like i said you were avoiding responding. you might as well be putting words in my mouth

ok, fair enough. now why do you think we're any less free than you?
User avatar #784 to #782 - iisammehii (08/07/2012) [-]
Oh I wasn't doing it to show how more free we are, I was doing it show that the USA isn't as free as they think they are, or more free than anyone else. Granted there are a lot of countries without a lot of freedom but there are still a lot with.

This: www.youtube.com/watch?v=16K6m3Ua2nw

It may be from a TV show, but it's right. Have you seen the stuff going on over there right now? Police terrorising civilians? People being oppressed whether it's political or religious.

No, I'm not trying to say that you were doing such actions, but how many times do you ******* see on posts Americans posting over the top patriotic pictures when someone complains about something, acting as if they have more freedom than the other? They're trying to act bigger by telling someone they have the exact amount of freedom as anyone else, it doesn't make sense.

thank you, i apologize for my ignorance
#810 to #629 - awesomescorpion (10/08/2013) [-]
Actually, it is more about preventing them simply being able to walk around with them, because that just incentivizes crime and violence more easily. Also, pot and guns are different. Guns are murder weapons, it's their only reason to exist. Just learn a martial art if your concerned about your self-defence. In fact, most countries with gun control have far less crime than the US, so it only makes sense. Apples and oranges.
#812 to #810 - jrondeau **User deleted account** (10/08/2013) [-]
>learn a martial art if your concerned about self defense

Gun > karate every single time bro. Seriously, I may not be too gung-ho about firearm availability, but you're completely delusional if you think a karate chop is going to beat an armed assailant.

And the US has tried gun control before and its always failed miserably. Comparing the US to other countries is comparing apples and oranges.

Besides, this **** that I posted a year ago is just poking fun at the hypocrisy of certain liberally minded people who think that outlawing something that they see as bad will make it go away when they disprove that point by smoking dope. It doesn't have much to do with guns in particular, just the practice of outlawing something negative as a means to prevent it. We can all agree that a lot drugs are pretty bad and can result in serious harm to a lot of people, both direct and indirect, but clearly making them illegal doesn't make them go away.
