And that he's willing to go his life without it which makes him a bigger man than probably 99.9% of this site.

He's rejecting technological advancements because he has lived his entire life that way.
He's not better than anyone, just stuck with tradition.

When a child brought up in the Amish tradition turns a certain age, they are allowed to go out into society for a year to experience the lifestyle that you and I are accustomed to. After that year they can decide whether or not they want to remain in the Amish community, or live with the general society. So you're wrong.
User avatar #32 to #27 - vigilum (07/10/2012) [-]
I know about that, but I am not wrong.
They were raised with ideals and you don't loose those in a years time. And most of the relatives they have would still be Amish.
User avatar #49 to #32 - lobotomizedlions (07/10/2012) [-]
Ah, I wrote that assuming you believed they never left their society at all. My apologies.
User avatar #50 to #49 - vigilum (07/10/2012) [-]
Oh that's completely alright. Can be a bit hard to know if other people know certain things.

How does never having seen internet porn make him a bigger man? I wouldn't even say it's big of him to stick with his ways without trying other people's ways of life.

he chose that lifestyle so to him it doesn't really matter since he prefers no electricity.
User avatar #40 to #39 - kanatana (07/10/2012) [-]
Er... Please, someone correct me if I'm wrong here (as I probably am, I'm no expert), but isn't that wrong? I mean, his ancestors chose the path of the Luddites, not him; foregoing technology and advances in science was something that his great-great etc grand parents chose, not him.

I believe that I heard about some thing where young Amish are given some time to choose to leave the lifestyle... but meh.
User avatar #42 to #40 - supername (07/10/2012) [-]
yes and no. while their ancestors did choose this lifestyle the modern amish are given the freedom of choosing if they want to continue this lifestyle or not and yes the newer generation are given a period of time where they are let go to experience the world and they can choose weather to come back or not. However a lot of times they are ostracized by the family if they choose to give up the amish life.
User avatar #43 to #42 - kanatana (07/10/2012) [-]
Yeah... see, that's one of the things I don't understand. They're given the option, but given the scarlet letter for making the choice? It's kind of a crude simile, but that's like offering someone a piece of cake, then calling them a fatass after they eat the cake.
User avatar #44 to #43 - supername (07/10/2012) [-]
yeah, it's exactly like that good ex.
User avatar #45 to #44 - kanatana (07/10/2012) [-]
I'm not trying to be a dick, I swear. I'm pretty religious tolerant across the board. But... is it okay to be frustrated that people still live that lifestyle in this day and age?
User avatar #46 to #45 - supername (07/10/2012) [-]
if they are happy with that life style then they should be able to do it. Although I do understand your frustration it is a religious thing for them. It's the same thing a lot of
non-religious people have against religious ones "we have come the pint where we have scientific evidence of the big bang (higgs boson), we have proof of evolution, and other scientific advancements yet people continue to believe in an anonymous, omnipresent person who created everything, grants your prayers, and takes you to heaven when you die.

Amish are actually really nice in situations like that. We lost power for 2 weeks and they made us some food.

My power came back on 3 days later. Things were still pretty ****** up for the rest of Virginia. Vinton couldn't use any tap water because sewage had spilled into the river due to the treatment plants power failure.
