people think tipping is mandatory, screw the normal 15%, ill tip you on how well you refill my drink and bring me food...DANCE PUPPETS DANCE!

If you get $5 on a $138 tip, they did it on purpose. It means you were a ****** waitress. Never leave no tip, 'cause then they'll just thing you're cheap or forgetful, but if you purposely leave a very small tip it's a slap in the face.

I don't understand the big deal about tips over in the US, You work for a fixed wage and shouldn't expect anything else. It would be very rare to receive a tip over here in the UK. Heres a tip getting a higher paying job if you want more money.
User avatar #567 to #553 - notquitesolidsnake (06/21/2012) [-]
the wage that they make is $2.13

I do realise its a accustomed deal in the US but i didn't realise it was because of such a low wage. Thats a terrible excuse for an employer to get away with charging their staff low.
User avatar #591 to #569 - iRetaliate (06/22/2012) [-]
You're an idiot...

If waiters were paid wage with no tips, they would make minimum wage, no matter where they worked (which would be an ENORMOUS amount of work for an ENORMOUSLY low pay)

As it stands, good waiters generally make $20-$25 an hour.

**AkatsukiNekoJr rolled a random image posted in comment #4 at Charmander ** My mother worked as a waitress, and made $2 an hour. She worked hard to make tips in order to compensate for it though.
User avatar #585 to #576 - iHAXnoobs (06/22/2012) [-]
$2 an hour, holy **** , minimum wage here is $10.15
User avatar #586 to #585 - AkatsukiNekoJr (06/22/2012) [-]
Minimum is about $7.25 here, but since she worked at a place where tips could bring in as much as $50 for a table, they're allowed to pay less.
User avatar #588 to #587 - AkatsukiNekoJr (06/22/2012) [-]
Yeah, but she was a nice enough waitress to make up the difference.

But see, in the US, waiters and other servants can and are LEGALLY paid under minimum wage, because it is custom that the waiters be tipped. Tips are the only way that waiters make any money.
User avatar #556 to #553 - eggoman (06/21/2012) [-]
In the U.S. you get paid far under minimum wage if you receive tips.

Kinda crazy that
1. pay for food
2. gotta pay more just so that the waiter/waitress can afford roof over his/her head, food on the table etc etc.

Its like I would pay extra on my electrical bill just so that the data entry clerk could go get something to eat. Restaurants should pay their employees properly instead. Of course she gets pissed of, but she should have been pissed of at her employer instead.

Yes I once worked as a waiter for a couple of months with minimumwage, that sucked.
Made pretty good on tip though... ^^

At least where i live, if you dont make enough in tips they have to give you minimum wage for the day anyway, and most people are polite so its not like its a horrible deal most of the time
#552 to #536 - anonymous (06/21/2012) [-]
most waiters don't make minimum wage, most waiters get $2.13 an hour + tip and - taxes
User avatar #549 to #536 - swimmingprodigy (06/21/2012) [-]
I would agree with you if waiters and waitresses got paid minimum wage; I heard that at a lot of places they dont; they paid something like 4 or 5 dollars an hour because theyre expected to make up the difference in tips.

If you're doing a good job a waitress or waiter can bring in a lot of money.... My sister is a waitress for a living and no **** she brings in over $200 just in tips on weekends. She's making more than me in three days than I am in a week! It's not that hard to be pleasant :) A few kind words, compliments, and making sure the customers food is satisfying and drinks are filled is all you need to be making bank in the industry. Just the other day I ate out, found my food wasn't satisfying and informed my waitress. While it wasn't her fault she did everything she could and gave us free drinks for the night (four sodas at $2.00 taken off our bill) and a new meal for myself. Money wasn't an issue for us; Needless to say we tipped her a $20 for her prompt and excellent service.

I work for tips so I usually leave really big tips when I go to restaurants. Even if the server is rude I leave a tip, though not as good as it should be. Judging by this girl, she was lucky to get five bucks.

That's crap I never would not tip a server under 20% especially in Cali that place is expensive that server had every right to be mad they work like dogs for tips you non Americans don't know what your talking about in The USA it's quite a taboo not to tip. I would be personally embarrassed to not tip, or to tip that little.

I thought tips stood for To Insure Proper service, so if your waiter is being an ass shouldn't you be able to give them a small tip or none at all?

She didn't seem to pleasant in her facebook post....She probably was a poor server as well. $5.00 was being generous to her sorry ass D:< Yes, this employee deserved to be fired. What happened to taking pride in your work? People shouldn't slander their companies name.... Who's going to want to eat at Chilies when the waitresses and waiters are going to spit in your food?

Well, she's a brat...

YES! Waitresses rely on tips.

But if you demand a certain PERCENTAGE tip from each customer, than you're a ******* **** ...

That's to say that you deserve more simply because the food at your restaurant is more expensive. If the guy went in ALONE, you should be happy that you got at least a $3 tip (most people only spend $20 for themselves at a restaurant, 15% of which is $3)

User avatar #533 to #475 - iRetaliate (06/21/2012) [-]
I highly doubt that the best waitress on Earth (or even a good one for that matter) (or anybody with common decency) would threaten to spit in somebody's food.

When I used to work as a waiter, I had people who just wouldn't tip me. I was a really good waiter, so most people tipped me a higher tip than normal (usually 18%-20%), so I didn't have to worry about the one guy who didn't tip.

That's what sad about America. Whoever did this must be financially supported by their parents to not be able to see what it is like in the real world. Waitresses earn 4.25 an hour excluding tips. When a table with that kind of bill shows up, they probably took up the table for about 2 hours, and they probably used more than one table. So to leave her a 5 dollar tip is jack **** . She didn't deserve it unless she never showed up at the table, but we don't know if she did or not.

I guess the concept is very different in other countries. I live in Canada and tipping is the extra thank you from the customers. Saying that we liked how you treated us and gave us our food. Its not a mandatory thing. If we didn't like the service no tip for you. I guess in the U.S the waiters and waitresses make their money by the tips, but there's still no reason to bitch about it.
