See, I think that all classic rock groups have modern day equivalents. For example, Rob Zombie is the modern Ozzy Ozbourne. Both of them started off in a group with a different name, wrote songs with darker themes and topics, maintained a demonic/evil image, and then broke off into their own successful solo careers branching across multiple forms of media.

In this Scenario, Nickelback would be the modern Styx. They have some songs about being badass, some songs about love, they are both very popular with bikers (they headlined in sturgis), and everyone and their mother makes fun of them constantly, even though everyone knows the words to their songs and sings along at every opportunity. It's just cool to make fun of them.

Styx and Nickelback's music are nothing alike. They're more like the modern day KISS to me (sans the face paint)

Maybe my example wasn't the best, but what I was trying to say was that Styx and NB are not the same at all.

They do have songs that I like, but I won't go out of my way to listen to them. They're just another band in my itunes, and when shuffle plays them, I'll listen.
But let me tell you, I went to one of their concerts back in 2009. Those guys know how to put on a goddamn show. Them, Papa Roach, Hinder, and Saving Abel. It was an insane concert. Tits everywhere.

I like them. I've got a friend though that used to love them but now criticizes me for not hating them because somebody made it cool to hate them... fml.

Damn right they do, Jacoby hopped offstage and ran all the way up the stands and jumped around for a few songs
#424 to #367 - gmarrox (06/19/2012) [-]
Saw them two years ago. Jacoby ran out into the audience to hype the crowd and he needed help over a chair so me and my dad both reached for his hand at the same time. My dad got to him first so ended up accidentally and very awkwardly rubbing his pant leg.

True, I won't go out of my way to listen to them, but I wouldn't go out of my way to tell people they suck either, they're literally just another band in my eyes, and 9/10 people who hate them have definitely sung "how you remind me" out loud at least once.

I've never really liked Nickleback; they've got a handful of songs that I can enjoy.

But even if I hated them, there's something to be said for the way they handle their hate. I've really never seen an artist/band take it in stride how they do. As much as I hate hearing songs about sex every other track, Chad and the guys seem pretty cool about the whole thing.
User avatar #842 to #776 - malacyman (06/20/2012) [-]
They took topics like sex, drugs and alcohol to a whole new level. They have created the ultimate party songs. like bottoms up is a song that anybody can have a good time singing.

The albums are pretty generic, especially the more recent ones, but the sound isn't bad. Nothing they write is gonna blow you away, but to me it's something easy to listen to. I don't understand why people hate them with so much passion, at least they play instruments and have some musical ability. They're not rock legends, they shouldn't be as popular as they are. But they're also not electronic, they're not autotuned. They are a decent bad, plain and simple.
User avatar #337 to #306 - scotlandspie (06/19/2012) [-]
well part of their popularity is that they are a Canadian icon, and that's important because of canadian law like 30 percent of music on the radio has to be canadian

I've honestly loved Nickleback, I did NOT like Dark Horse and Here and Now

All the Right Reasons and Silver Side Up and The Long Road however, Well that's a different story.

Silver Side Up was the first album I ever bought, back when I was like 6. I'm into metal now but that album will always have a special place in my heart.

I went to a Nickelback concert and went back stage to meet them (I won them from a radio station) and they were nice and kicked ass...I don't see why people hate them.

User avatar #11 - lmaopwnt (06/19/2012) [-]
Nickelback certainly isn't one of my favorites, but they aren't as bad as everyone makes them out to be, true most of their songs are redundant as **** (they play the same verse again and again and again) but overall they're ok.

i agree with you. most of those haters are just some douches, who probably know two or three songs of them. some songs of their album "the long road" actually sound a bit like crossfade or staind.

That's the thing. Crossfade and staind are horrible too.
I just hate the vocal harmony that's prevalent in that type of radio rock.

User avatar #531 to #11 - theninjakai (06/19/2012) [-]
Same here.

I don't hate them at all, they're an alright band to be honest...

But still heaps people hate them a lot for some unknown reason.

Remember when a whole city put forward a petition to not have Nickleback play there? When I heard that I thought to myself..."Why? You're getting a cool rock band to play in your town. I'm guessing you want some generic mainstream artist or something?"

When it comes to hating a lot of today's music...It kinda makes sense since those who hate it have good reasons to, but with Nickleback though...I'm quite confused.

User avatar #816 to #11 - jesusnipple (06/20/2012) [-]
It's mostly their newer songs that are really repetitive. I liked "The Long Road" by them, I thought it was pretty good

I liked Silverside Up, but they turned into a really generic and stupid band. Most of it stems from the fact that they used to be a very good, competent rock band.
