LoK is definitely more dark and serious. Bolin is a good comic relief, but he is no Sokka. Also, they trashed the whole Anime thing, with exaggerated, comical caricatures when yelling at each other and stuff.

Then there's the whole political, bureaucratic side of the story, which wasn't really in TLA, except in the episodes in Ba Sing Sei.

And there's definitely a diferent way of handling each single episode: In TLA there was a theme for every episode, a single storyline, a problem between the main characters or a certain obstacle they needed to pass in that episode; IE. the whole thing with Kyoshi's murder, Lady in the Water, Sokka's sword mastership. And there was the always parallel storyline of Zuko and Iroh.

In LoK it is more of a Game of thrones approach (no, I'm not saying there's any connection, even inspirational) where all the episodes connect, and the episodes kind of finishes what started in the last one, and ends in a cliffhanger, with less of an individual story.

Maybe I'm the only one, but I can't shrug off the feeling that LoK dwells too much on teenage-y substories and plots. The whole love triangles and squares that don't seem to bring anything innovative r aren't particularly well done. I guess that's part of character development, but everitime they start those scenes I'm find myself waiting for them to drop the whole thing and get on with the episode.
As for the political aspect... I don't see what's so political about LoK. There's basically two views: Tenzen's and Tarrlok. Tenzen is the "good guy" and Tarrlok is the power-craving "bad guy", thile the other chairmen and women are just there to go along with Tarrlok and outvote Tenzen. They don't even seem to have personality themselves.
All in all, I can say I preferred the storytelling of TLA and I can't see how LoK is any darker than it (I'm not counting the filler episodes in TLA, but that's another matter). But I do love how Tenzen has his "flip out moments Anime style, like they used to have in the first series.

There's been one running teenager-y subplot. Those things happen in real life and are just under the surface.

As for politics, it's less about that and more about the abstract concept of politics: Definitions of justice and equality, methodology of rule, all that stuff.
#42 to #30 - anon (06/19/2012) [-]
It's just that i don't see what makes it about those 'methodology of rule'. Yes, they do bring a valid point of the 'benders vs non benders' where the benders are ruled by the 'superior' benders, but the equalists fail to make a case for the anti-bender faction since they are... well, terrorists. Exploding buildings and promoting violence and all that evil stuff. My point is that I don't see LoK challenging anyone's views or being remotely 'dark'.

And yes, there is pretty much only one or two teenager-y plots, but they tend to show up pretty often. I know these things happen in real life, I just wished they'd have gone about it in a more original manner or, if they're sticking to old formulas, try to do it a little better than just the plain love triangle / square with nothing new.

I don't mind the teenager sub-stories, as they are an expected part of the series. There was quite a bit of love stories in TLA and now everyone is just a couple of years older, so of course there will be more of that kind. Furthermore, I think it's pretty well done.

As for the political aspect, I didn't mean it was political or controversial as a series, not at all, but the politics and the frustrations of the Avatar being undermined as an authority in this 'new age' is a pretty significant part of the story.

I preferred the storytelling of TLA as well, but on the other hand, I am glad they didn't just make a copy of that, but actually made a whole new series, a new style, and it is well done, even though it is different from what I would have expected.

I think it's important to take into account the fact that ATLA had a much more expansive time-frame to fill (over 60 episodes) therefore they had time to further develop the characters through somewhat off course stories, I mean for the duration of the first season they were just traveling to the North Pole encountering different scenarios and problems along the way. However, this is what made these characters so memorable, fascinating and that's why we love them.

LoK on the other hand is somewhat different. The time-frame is much less (ONLY 26 episodes... ********* !) so there is a much tighter story line and the setup is appropriate, as it all occurs in Republic City, not as much freedom as ATLA had in terms of side stories. And the creators act accordingly, so they attempt to get right to the story and take less time to develop the characters, though they're so damn well written it's practically unnecessary and we love them anyway, and especially those that originated from our favourite characters, like Tenzin, Lin, Iroh (2 lines in the series so far and is already a badass), among others. That's also why we're hoping that Amon is somewhat related to the characters from ATLA because that would just be awesome, otherwise if he turns out to be some random character wouldnt be as epic (btw anyone know who's Sokka's and Suki's (two NON-benders) kids are? Meditate on that).

I'm writing a ******* novel here, but seeing the last episode of LoK had me distracted the whole week and I can't stop thinking and theorizing about it. Anyway, TL;DR: the shows ******* awesome, the characters are ******* awesome, what happened to Sokka and Suki, and did they have a child? Just sayan, and also can't wait for the season finale. Respect to whoever actually reads all that! Post theories, comments, question, I love to read fan made stuff.

Inb4 cool story bro

I think it's 'cause LoK is catered to the audience that grew up watching TLA. I kinda like how TV programs are growing with their viewers, i.e. LoK, Toonami and that's all I can think of right now. If only Pokemon had taken a hint..

well, this isn't actually that wierd, you know. nickolodeon saw what kind of age group wached tla the most, and it turnes out that most of the watchers are adults. therefore they chose to make it a more grown-up program. i kind of like it!

User avatar #35 to #23 - inyourmind (06/19/2012) [-]
Let me make it sadder. The song was actually about the voice actor who had just died. Mako from the legend of Korra is names after him.

Was just Iroh. Not General Iroh.

Both Irohs in the series are generals. Though, when Zuko's uncle was in Ba Sing Se he technically didn't have title anymore, he will always be general Iroh to me though.
