Fact: Busses were first used only for the elderly and it was deemed no big loss in the event of a crash. When busses were repurposed for school children it was still deemed no big loss in the event of a crash.

Evidently, research shows that seat belts don't work the same way they do in heavy buses than cars. Buses are actually very safe due the the fact that they are so heavy, and that the large seats act as make-shift air bags in the event of a collision. That's why the buss driver has one and not the kids; the buss driver has no seat in front of him to lessen the impact.

Seat belts are actually required in buses that are under 10k lbs. And according to national statistics less than 100 children die a year in buss related accidents. while it's something like 1000 die each year by walking, biking, or driving to school. Seat belts are also make buses much more expensive, since it puts more of a limit on how many children can be on the buss.

I mean, if the buss starts tumbling over the side of the road into a ditch your pretty ****** either way. But when it comes to collisions with other vehicles the impact that the passengers receive is usually against the seats.

So yeah. That's why.

Ok, I could understand that if all buses were in suburban/urban areas where the biggest things that they deal with are pick up trucks and SUVs, but what about my bus, i live in the country and go down the most traveled highway in the area, where transport trucks, box trucks, tractors, construction vehicles, etc. go down.
Your logic works if it's a head on, or rear end collision with a personal vehicle, but what about an accident with a transport truck?
User avatar #85 to #83 - idelki (06/15/2012) [-]
I also live on the country side, and collisions with cars/trucks/SUV's still happen more often. But yes, there is the threayd of farm vehicles and transport trucks. If it's a head on/rear collision, the same principles apply, but if hit from the side I could see seat-belts being more useful. It's just that those kinds of accidents don't happen nearly as much as those with other vehicles.

Yeah, thats why they put a metal bar in teeth height on all the seats in front of you...

Like I said; if the buss flips like that you're pretty much screwed. The g-forces in an accident like that are so great that it might even be worse having a seat-belt holding you back. I could imagine some of them having broken limbs, severe bruising, and even being strangled by the belts.

User avatar #131 to #129 - barpmeep (06/15/2012) [-]
i don't see why a bus would hit a wall though? Plus the kids would be safer hitting the seat in front of them, versus getting whiplash in their necks whilst wearing a seat belt

It could happen, and they would most likely be thrown past the seat in front of them

No fatal or serious injuries, but if a ******* semi truck hit it and didn't try stopping, yeah i think it would do a lot of damage if given the correct circumstances.

If they had seat-belts on the injuries wouldn't be much better. They might have even been hurt more if they had been tethered by a seat-belt.

Pretty sure the gif is speed up quite a bit. My friends and I just went on a huge hunt for like a news report on this and, if we found the correct one, the injuries were described as bumps and bruises.
User avatar #87 to #86 - jbthegiant (06/15/2012) [-]
Twas just a funny gif...Im not arguing about the Physics. I mean, either you are going to get hurt by the sudden jolt, while being tied down to your seat, or you are going to get ****** up by smashing your face against the wall of the bus at 80+Mph so either way the kids are screwed. Stop trying to be a kill joy, I did not say anything contrary to your argument, so let us have some fun, fuddy duddy

When schoolbuses were first starting to become in use, yes, there were seatbelts.

However, as the years went on, it became impractical to use them because:

1) Kids often didn't wear them, and **** me if I had to make sure 30+ unruly little ***** were all buckled in for every goddamn ride to and from school; it would take FOREVER.
2) There were a lot of reported injuries from children hitting each other with them.
3) The crash physics on a bus are different. A schoolbus is a HUGE vehicle and the passengers are seated much higher, making them safer in the case of a side collision. Plus, the backs of the seats are built so the child will be thrown into it and be cushioned in the impact. I'm not saying it doesn't hurt, but it's safe.
User avatar #115 to #89 - trollchildxy (06/15/2012) [-]
Except when your in high school and much taller than the seat, then you just suffer whiplash due to your head rapping against the top of the seat.
