wait, wait, wait.

When i was a kid i had trachoma and had to wear a bandage not to unveil under any condition over my eyes (china, no antibiotics in the area). I was in the dark for several days and didn't turn blind.
Aaaand now the whole comp becomes doubtful to me...

Turning Blind Is Bull ****
miners almost never get blind after weeks in total darkness
they just need to be careful when starring at the sun

total darkness doesnt mean wearing a helmet with a light on it with hundreds of other people doing the same thing. it means sit in a room where it doesnt matter if your eyes are closed or opened

think about it, it makes sense. your iris muscles contract (make your pupils wider) to let more light in and relax when you're in the dark. too much will cause them to not work anymore. kind of like putting a tight elastic band around your finger for a few days, it's gonna eventually die and fall off.

the eye may take a little longer in a real situation, but i think it's a perfectly valid conjecture

Permanent blindness? No.
Being in absolute darkness that long will only cause temporary blindness due to the eyes straining to find light, but you won't loose your vision permanently.
There have been cases of cave explorers getting stuck in caves waiting for days before rescue. When recovered, their vision was impaired, but eventually returned to normal.
