This guy, this ******* guy. He went to the edge of the goddam atmosphere. When he first jumped, he didn't feel any wind rushing past him. Obvious if you've only ever jumped from within the atmosphere, you'd think that no wind=no falling. Thing is, he was so high up, there was no air resistance, so when he turned around to try and get back into his pod, he saw it was hurtling away from him at insane speed. The lack of air resistance meant he was accelerating at the speed of gravity with nothing stopping him.

This ******* guy.

If he was going faster than terminal velocity at 13.6 miles I don't think he would survive at 23 miles.

I was not thinking of the suit. If he was going at much faster than terminal velocity (if he was already going faster at 13 miles, he would go exponentially faster at 26 miles), once he hit the atmosphere he would have to slow down to terminal velocity, and if he slowed down at a high rate, he would burn up in the atmosphere.

i was reading an article about how his suit was put together

it had 3 layers, 4 parachutes, 2 batteries

he pretty much had his own atmosphere. some cameras it. his mask was made to defrost automatically.

legit man
#46 to #2 - tehbomb (05/28/2012) [-]
Does that mean that he would reach terminal velocity and then SLOW DOWN?

CHRIST. ******* MIRACLES.
#102 to #46 - ilgattozaiga (05/28/2012) [-]
Until he reaches the atmosphere he basically has no terminal velocity, but when he does reach the atmosphere the air will sow him down like a great big marshmallow

Pilot Felix Baumgartner is seen before his jump during the first manned test flight for the Red Bull Stratos mission, on March 15, 2012 in Roswell, New Mexico. He reached the altitude 71500 ft and landed safely near Roswell. He is attempting to break the speed of sound on the freefall mission. (Jay Nemeth/Red Bull/Getty Images)
User avatar #15 to #9 - phoenix grinder (05/28/2012) [-]
didn't they fire that thing up there? rendering him a passenger as opposed to a pilot?

The capsule he was in, was sent up in a balloon. only reaching the atmosphere
User avatar #12 to #9 - elbrysobrony (05/28/2012) [-]
Wait... wouldn't the terminal velocity or something stop him from falling that fast? Hate to be a killjoy, but...
User avatar #20 to #12 - pinesolpowers (05/28/2012) [-]
He's up in the atmosphere, there is no air resistance up there.

... Holy **** ... That dude puts all other badasses to shame... That would explain EVERYTHING.
User avatar #99 to #12 - ickalanda (05/28/2012) [-]
Terminal velocity isn't like some magical fastest speed possible for people to fall. It's directly related to your resistance with the air.

It has to do with how much surface area you take up in the direction that you are falling versus how many particles are in the air at that location.

This is why when skydivers spread their limbs out and lay in a horizontal position relative to the Earth they can slow their speed down and have better control.

Also from such a high altitude the air resistance would be almost negligible.

Good info to know :)

User avatar #180 to #173 - dommazzetti (05/28/2012) [-]
its good however i have to say the best cut scenes are from mass effect, becuase they have a huge role in the game

Except for the sudden-onset-stormtrooper-syndrome Shepard has and his magical M-8 Avenger that he keeps in his invisible pocket next to his magical M-3 Predator regardless of what he was currently carrying. Other than that, yeah. Mass Effect has good cutscenes.
